SEARCY, Ark. – Henderson State came into Rhodes-Reaves Field House off of back-to-back wins for the first time this season. It left with a three-game winning streak as the Reddies (4-5) got its revenge on the Harding Lady Bisons, 82-75. Coming into this game, Henderson State had not beaten Harding on the road since 2016.
Â
As has been the case in the Reddies' last two wins, hot shooting was the story of the night. HSU shot 49% from the field (27-55) while connecting on 50% of its deep balls (12-24) compared to only 22% (2-9) from Harding.
Â
Four Reddies scored in double-figures as
Maci Mains led the way with 26 points, her most since the season-opener, followed by
Karrington Whaley with 14 and
Ashley Farrar with 12.
Gracie Raby did her damage on the glass as she pulled down 15 rebounds and registered the game's final two free throws for seven points in the contest.
Â
Henderson's
Sonni Martin, off of a 7-of-9 performance from deep in HSU's last outing, started out the contest connecting on three of her first seven attempts.
Maci Mains hit two of her own as she went 2-3 from long range. Martin led HSU with nine of her 11 points in the opening frame while Mains gave the visiting Reddies six as HSU, despite missing on seven of their final eight field goal attempts, led the Lady Bisons after one, 20-15.
Â
Mains, Farrar, and Whaley had 18 of HSU's 20 second quarter points as Whaley went 3-3 from the field. As a team, the Reddies shot 57.1% from the field in the second as they held a 40-33 lead going into halftime.
Â
Henderson shot an even 47% from the field and from beyond-the-arc in the first half while Harding was only shooting 20% (1-5) from three-point territory. Mains led all Reddies scorers with 13 points. Raby and
Lani Snowden led HSU in the other major categories with seven rebounds for Raby and eight assists for Snowden.
Â
Mains' fourth 3-pointer and
Ashley Farrar's second paired with Harding sporting a two a half minute drought to open the second half helped HSU build a 48-36 lead at the first media timeout of the period. HSU kept it up with a 6-0 run out of the timeout for a 54-36 advantage.
Â
Four turnovers from the Reddies turning into a 7-0 run from the Lady Bisons down the stretch plus a triple at the buzzer for Harding allowed HU to cut into the deficit going into the fourth, 60-49.
Â
Harding opened the quarter scoring the first four points, cutting the deficit to single digits, before a Mains layup extended the lead to nine with just under eight minutes remaining, 62-53. A 6-0 run by the Reddies helped push their lead out again to double digits, 66-53. The lead was 11 in favor of HSU heading into the game's final media timeout. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Â
Foul trouble began to be an issue for Henderson as both Martin and Whaley picked up their fourth fouls with only three minutes remaining in regulation. Off of HSU's misfortune, Harding went on a 6-0 run to make the contest a one-possession game at 72-69 with two minutes left.
Â
With it looking like a repeat of the two teams' last meeting was brewing after Henderson saw its big lead evaporate, Mains hit her biggest deep ball of the night with 1:34 remaining, giving HSU a little breathing room at 75-69. Â Free throws from Mains, Martin, and Raby iced the game as Henderson State left Rhodes-Reaves Field House with the victory, 82-75.
Â
Henderson State returns to play Thursday Feb. 18 when they face Southern Arkansas for the fourth and final time this season. Following the contest with the Muleriders, HSU will see three-straight inside the Duke Wells Center.
