Henderson Handles Tech for the Fourth Time

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Raekwon Rogers had a season-high 23 points and 11 rebounds for Henderson State on Saturday as the Reddies rolled past Arkansas Tech for the fourth time this season 83-70 at the Duke Wells Center.

Rogers finished 7-of-11 from the floor and had 17 points and seven rebounds in the second half alone. Malik Riddle added 18 for the Reddies, while Drake Wilks had a season-high 11 and Xavier Davenport chipped in 10. Yuri Swinford pulled down a career-best 12 rebounds in his second-straight start.

Arkansas Tech got off on the right foot on the road and hit its first four shots to take an early 10-5 lead. The Reddies (7-7) answered in short order, however. HSU used nine points from Riddle to spur a 20-8 run over the next eight minutes and sprint out to a 25-18 advantage at the 8:00 mark of the opening half.

After the Wonder Boys closed the gap to 25-22 with back-to-back baskets, it was Wilks who got going for the Reddies. The senior from Haskell scored five-straight on a 3-pointer and a baseline floater to help Henderson take its largest lead, 34-22, with 4:02 in the half. Tech found the last spurt of the half, though, and closed the deficit to 41-34 at the break with a 12-7 run to end the period.

ATU shot 55% from the floor in the first half but the Reddies out-rebounded the Wonder Boys 20-9 in the first 20 minutes of play.

Henderson began to extend its lead to open the second half. The Reddies opened the period on a 16-7 run, which was capped by a step-back 3-pointer from Quawn Marshall, to take their largest advantage of the game, 57-41, with 14 minutes remaining.

Tech refused to go away and gradually climbed its way back into the contest by trimming the deficit down to 69-61 at the 5:48 mark. HSU struggled from the field after taking a 16-point lead and hit on just 4-for-19 from the floor over the next 10 minutes.

Despite the cold-shooting stretch, the Reddies were able to stave off the Tech rally thanks in large part to three late 3-pointers from Davenport, Riddle and Rogers. The trio each canned big shots from deep in the final six minutes to help Henderson keep ATU at an arms length and pull away for its fourth win of the year over the Wonder Boys.

The Reddies were an excellent 9-of-20 from 3-point range on Saturday and out-rebounded Tech 43-33 in the win. HSU committed a season-low seven turnovers —only two of which came in the second half.

Henderson aims for its third-straight win on Monday night when it hosts Ouachita Baptist at 7:30 p.m.
