HSU Streak Snapped Despite Raby’s Career Night

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Ouachita Baptist played spoiler Monday night as Henderson State's four-game winning streak was snapped at the hands of the Tigers, 69-66. This was the Henderson women's first loss to Ouachita since 2017.

The deep ball refused to fall for HSU this time around as the Reddies only connected on 4-of-15 triples (26.7%). Gracie Raby saw her first double-double of her two-year Henderson career with 13 points and 12 rebounds, along with two steals. Lani Snowden followed Raby's performance with 12 points of her own.

Henderson State started off the contest in what looked like a continuation of the previous four games with HSU scoring on its first two trips down the court. OBU took the first punch in stride, however, as it kept pace with the Reddies for the first ten minutes only to eventually take a five point lead later in the period. The Tigers closed out the period on a 6-0 run to take the 22-18 advantage heading to the second.

That run to close the quarter spoke of things to come in the next ten minutes. Ouachita opened the quarter with an 18-4 run, building its largest lead of 18 points at the 5:37 mark of the second quarter. From there, the Reddies were down but not out as they began to make their way back.

The Reddies were able to climb back to within single digits before the half as OBU went into the locker room ahead 41-32. Gracie Raby was already a little over halfway to a double-double as she led all Henderson scorers with seven points along with six rebounds. Tamia Templeton matched Raby with six boards.

Henderson State kept up the intensity, opening the second half on a 15-2 run, giving the Reddies the 47-43 lead five minutes into the third quarter, marking HSU's first lead since 2:11 remaining in the first period. OBU did not relinquish its lead completely, however, as the game went into the final frame at a deadlock, 51-51.

The final ten minutes saw eight lead changes as neither team wanted to leave with the loss. The player of the evening for the Reddies Gracie Raby delivered what some thought was the final dagger with a lay-up in the lane with 45 seconds remaining in regulation, putting HSU up 66-65.

On the Tigers next possession, after an offensive rebound by OBU's Eden Crow on her own miss, a shooting foul called on Karrington Whaley sent Maija Gertsone of OBU to the free throw line where she connected on both freebies, giving OBU the 67-66.

An unsuccessful attempt on HSU's next possession all but sealed the victory for Ouachita as two more attempts from the charity stripe gave the visiting Tigers the 69-66 victory.

Henderson State struggled from the free throw line all night as it only connected on 12 of its 20 attempts compared to 21-26 for Ouachita Baptist.

Henderson State is back in action this Thursday at 5:30 for senior night when the Harding Lady Bisons visit the Duke Wells Center.
