MONTICELLO, Ark. — Henderson State shot just 36.4% from the floor on Saturday evening and fell to Arkansas-Monticello 72-59 in its regular season finale.
Raekwon Rogers led the Reddies with 12 points, while Xavier Davenport had 10 and both Malik Riddle and Yuri Swinford added nine.
The result did not affect HSU's standing going into the GAC Tournament next week. Henderson will be the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Division and will play No. 6 seed Harding on Monday night.
Things were neck and neck early in Steelman Fieldhouse, but with the Reddies on top 18-15 with 7:21 remaining in the half, UAM flipped the game on its head. The Weevils out-scored HSU 18-5 over the remainder of the period to grab all the momentum and seize a 33-23 halftime lead. Henderson made just one field goal in the final nine minutes of the opening half.
A dunk by Jeremiah Toney with 14:40 left in regulation brought Henderson within 40-33 at the start of the second half, but UAM hit two 3-pointers to help stretch its lead back out to 50-38 at the 11:34 mark. Two free throws from Swinford once again closed the gap to seven points for the Reddies, 54-47, with just over eight minutes to go in the game, but it would be as close as HSU would come.Â
Back-to-back Weevil 3-pointers jump-started a 12-3 run for UAM over the next four minutes. The big spurt stretched Monticello's lead to 16 points and iced the game, as Henderson never again got within single digits.
HSU out-scored UAM 32-22 in the paint in the loss, but shot just 2-of-12 from beyond the 3-point line and finished with a season-low six assists as a team.Â
Henderson faces No. 6 seed Harding at 7:30 p.m. on Monday night at the Duke Wells Center in the first round of GAC Tournament play.Â
