RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Henderson State's cold shooting paired with Arkansas Tech's hot night spelled disaster for the Reddies as the division-leading Golden Suns defeated HSU 98-62.
Â
Two stats tell the story of the game: Arkansas Tech shot 57% from the field where Henderson State shot 35%. Five Golden Suns shot at least 44% or better and all of them took four or more shots from the floor.
Â
The Reddies were able to keep it close early, but a 6-0 run to close the first quarter by Arkansas Tech stretched the lead to 27-14 after one. ATU shot a blistering 75% from the field in the opening 10 minutes.
Â
Tech returned to earth a bit in the second quarter, shooting a mere 50% from the field to HSU's 31.3%. The discrepancy in shooting allowed ATU to pad its lead and head into the locker room up 51-29. Farrar put up five of her team-high 11 points in the second frame.
Â
The Golden Suns kept up their hot shooting throughout the second half while the Reddies' shooting woes continued. Even at the free-throw line, Tech did not miss a free throw until the third quarter. ATU finished the game shooting 83.3% (15-18) from the line en route to its seventh victory on the season. Â Â
Â
Henderson State was led by Farrar and
Tamia Templeton, who scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. Templeton, who scored her 10 on an efficient 5-of-7 shooting, has scored in double figures in three-straight games.
Â
Freshman walk-on
Annie Coffey scored a career-high eight points in only nine minutes of game time on 3-of-5 shooting and was 2-of-4 from beyond-the-arc. Coffey is one of five freshmen on this young HSU squad.
Â
The Reddies will welcome a familiar foe on Saturday at 2 p.m. when Southern Arkansas comes to the Duke Wells Center for the second time this season. It will be the third time the two teams have played this year.
