WEATHERFORD, Oklahoma –
Mallory Brewer moved into sixth place on the all-time strikeout list in HSU history as Henderson State extended its winning streak to six in game one of the first part of the weekend series with Southwestern Oklahoma State, 7-6. Game two had the Bulldogs edge out the Reddies on a walk-off two-run single, 6-5.
With 23 hits on the day for HSU as a team,
Addie Jordan saw her best game of her young Reddies career in game one of the day, filling the stat sheet with three hits on four at-bats and three RBIs while giving herself one run as five HSU batters saw multiple hits in the victory.
Czoey White boasted five hits on the day, including a team-high three hits in game two.
GAME ONE: Henderson State 7, Southwestern Oklahoma St. 6
Brewer started in the circle for Henderson State in game one. With two strikeouts in SWOSU's first at-bat, Brewer passed Patti Collins for the sixth most strikeouts in HSU history. An earned run in the bottom of the second gave the host-Bulldogs the 1-0 lead after two frames.
Jordan got the Reddies' offense rolling in the top of the third as a double to center field with the bases loaded scored
Kailey Reese and
Taylor Sledd, giving HSU the 2-1 lead. Back-to-back RBIs from
Morgan Reeve and
Alyssa Dixon scored two more runs as Henderson went into the bottom of the third with the 4-1 lead.
After allowing zero hits in the Bulldogs' third at-bat, Henderson kept up the scoring in the top of the fourth frame with two straight hits to open the at-bat, ending in a three hit, four run half-inning. Another solid three outs delivered by the HSU outfield in the bottom of the fourth, including a shortstop to first baseman to third baseman double play, gave the visiting-Reddies a 7-1 lead with play moving to the fifth.
Southwestern was able to get a hold on the hot bats of Henderson in the top of the fifth and sixth as the Reddies saw their first two no-hit at-bats of the contest. The Bulldogs saw their first runs since the second inning with a two-run homer from Jewel Lee to cut the HSU lead to four, 7-3. That was all HSU allowed, however, as the Reddies went into the final frame with the four-run advantage.
Henderson failed to extend its lead in the top of the seventh, leaving Southwestern needing four runs to keep the game alive. They nearly got just that as SWOSU's second two-run dinger paired with another run from a Brewer wild pitch cut the lead to 7-6, but HSU was able to hang on for the one-run win, marking the Reddies' sixth straight victory.
GAME TWO: Southwestern Oklahoma St. 6, Henderson State 5
The Bulldogs got off to a quick start as they built a 4-0 lead heading into the fourth. Henderson's fourth at-bat is when it saw its first run on a Sledd sacrifice fly RBI.
Leann Beasley held SWOSU at bay from inside the circle in the bottom of the fourth as the Reddies came back with another run in the top of the fifth.
With the count 4-2 in favor of the home team, the score remained such through the sixth as the game moved to the final inning of the day. Henderson found its most runs in an inning in its final at-bat as three runs by way of a White single and an
Abbie Moore double put the Reddies out in front, 5-4, with three outs standing between them and the first-day sweep.
With two outs on the board and the bases loaded, a walk-off single through the right side brought in two Bulldogs as SWOSU forced the day-one split, 6-5. With both teams seeing victory today, the series-deciding game comes tomorrow at 12 p.m.
