ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State will try to finish its season on a two-match winning streak when Ouachita Baptist comes to the Duke Wells Center for HSU's final game of the 2020-2021 season and the second and final Battle of the Ravine. With senior night recognitions taking place pre-match, first serve is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Â
With one match remaining in the regular season, Henderson is currently in a tie for third place with Arkansas-Monticello in the Eastern division of the Great American Conference. With a win, HSU will clinch the third seed as it holds the tie-breaker over UAM. If the Reddies lose, they would fall to the fifth seed with a Monticello win OR secure the fourth seed with a Monticello loss. The Blossoms of Arkansas-Monticello play Southern Arkansas Tuesday evening.
Â
Henderson State (4-5, 4-5)
The Reddies come into their season-finale off a five-set thriller against Arkansas Tech – the second five-set match of the season against ATU – where
Violeta Mendoza Quintana's 24 kills helped HSU prevail against the Golden Suns this time around, 3-2. Henderson as a team hit .316 in the final set to clinch the match.
Â
Mendoza Quintana is second on the team in kills (109) and digs (123). The junior-transfer out of New Mexico Military Institute is hitting .134 while leading all Reddies with 409 total attacks. The Chihuahua, Mexico native is also tied for first on the team with 11 service aces (
Makenzie Thoman).
Â
Seniors
Abby Blackburn and
Brittany Barnekoff will play their final Henderson State regular season match tomorrow night. Blackburn comes into this match with 1777 set assists in 91 matches in her career with a chance to become only the eight player in HSU history to reach 1800 assists. Barnekoff transferred to HSU in 2019, redshirting her first season. In her only year at Henderson, the senior from Kansas City, Missouri, is fourth on the team with 43 kills.
Â
Henderson State is 23-10 at home against OBU since 1993 and leads the overall series 31-20. The Tigers defeated HSU, however, in the last matchup inside the Duke Wells Center back in 2019, 3-1. Henderson is 3-1 on its home court this season. Â Â
Â
Ouachita Baptist (3-6, 3-6)
Since defeating Henderson State in the season's first matchup on Feb. 23, OBU has dropped four of its last five matches. In their one win in that stretch, the Tigers swept Southern Arkansas, 3-0, behind a .274 attack percentage for Ouachita through the three frames.
Â
