Henderson Topples OBU, Clinches No. 3 Seed

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State got 17 kills from Mya Robinson and a double-double from Violeta Mendoza Quintana to race past Ouachita Baptist 3-1 (25-22, 26-28, 28-26, 25-18) in the regular season finale at the Duke Wells Center.

Robinson had a match-high 17 kills on 53 attacks to lead the Reddies (5-5), while Mendoza Quintana chipped in 19 digs and 12 kills. Libero Makenzie Thoman finished with 29 digs and senior Abby Blackburn surpassed 1800 assists for her career with 28 on Tuesday night.

With the victory, HSU clinched the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Division for next week's GAC Tournament. The Reddies will host No. 6 seed Southern Arkansas on Tuesday, Apr. 6 in the first round of play.

SET ONE
Little could separate the two teams early in the match, as they split the first 30 points and found themselves knotted in a 15-15 tie more than halfway through the opening set. With the match still tied at 17-17 moments later, HSU put together the first run of the evening and used two service aces from Thoman and Madison Hatt to help score four of the next five points and seize a 21-17 lead — the largest of the set by either side. OBU closed the deficit to 21-20, but Henderson was able to close it out, 25-22, and take a 1-0 lead.

SET TWO
Ouachita got going to begin the second frame and scored five-straight points with the game tied 4-4 to take an 9-4 lead. The Lady Tigers built a lead as large as eight points, 16-8, but the Reddies began to fight back and used three kills from Robinson to cut the deficit down to 18-15 with a 7-2 run. The swing in momentum did not stop there, however, as HSU kept climbing and eventually tied the set, 22-22, on a kill by Mendoza Quintana. After surrendering the lead, OBU took the next two points to push Henderson to the brink. The Reddies did not go down without a fight, and staved off four different Ouachita set-points to stay alive, but the Lady Tigers ultimately closed it out, 27-25, to tie the match.

SET THREE
Henderson got off to a hot start in the third set and seized a 4-0 lead from the get-go. OBU responded, however, and won seven of the next eight points to go in front 7-5. The Lady Tigers' momentum continued over the next several points, as they opened up a commanding 17-11 advantage. Much like the second set, HSU refused to go away, and rallied with a 10-4 run to erase the deficit and tie it, 21-21. OBU once again put the Reddies on their heels by going in front 24-22, but Henderson answered the bell by staving off four more set points and eventually retaking a 27-26 lead. Robinson put the finishing touches on the set for Henderson with an emphatic kill to give HSU a 28-26 win and a 2-1 lead in the match.

SET FOUR
The strong play carried over into the fourth set for the Reddies, who opened up a 7-1 lead to begin the frame behind a kill and an ace from Mendoza Quintana. Ouachita answered by taking five-straight points to trim the Henderson advantage down to 7-6, but HSU had another run in store and put together an 8-4 spurt to extend the lead back out to 15-10. The Lady Tigers tried to scrap their way back into it, but the Reddies proved to be too much, and never again allowed OBU within four points of the lead. Up 20-16, Henderson closed out the match by winning four-straight points before finally taking it 25-18.
