Henderson Drops Doubleheader to UAM on Saturday

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State had opportunities on Saturday against Arkansas-Monticello, but the Reddies were unable to cash in and fell in both games of the doubleheader to the Boll Weevils at Clyde Berry Field.

HSU will look to take the final game of the series tomorrow at 1 p.m.

GAME 1: UAM 8, Henderson State 3
Arkansas-Monticello used terrific two-out hitting to plate eight runs and defeat HSU 8-3 in the series opener on Saturday.

The Weevils recorded nine of their 10 hits and scored all of their runs in the game with two outs against them. Reddie pitching surrendered 10 walks on the day and hit two Monticello batters.

Greyson Stevens led Henderson at the plate and finished 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and a RBI. Seven different players had hits in the series opener for HSU, who stranded 13 baserunners in defeat.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the Reddies tied things up on Stevens' RBI triple in the third. UAM responded by plating two more runs on a two-out triple in the fourth to make it 3-1 and chase Henderson starter Austin Cross after just 3.2 innings.

HSU was playing catch-up the remainder of the game, but had its chances throughout the day. The Reddies left the bases loaded in the fourth, however, and stranded two runners in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

Monticello, on the other side of things, cashed in on its opportunities late with two two-out runs in both the seventh and eighth, as well as a single run in the ninth to put the game away.

GAME 2: UAM 2, Henderson State 1
The Reddies got a terrific outing from Matthew Baker on the mound, but mustered just four hits and left nine runners on base in a 2-1 pitcher's duel loss to UAM.

Baker was spectacular in five innings of work for Henderson. The right hander from Rockwall, Texas gave up just one hit and no runs while striking out three batters. He allowed just one Weevil base runner in the final three innings of play.

With the bases loaded in the third and trailing 2-0, Henderson was handed some bad luck when Stevens was called for interference at the plate on a ball that got away from the Weevils' catcher. Bryson Haskins, who had come home to score on the errant pitch, was called out, erasing the first score of the game for HSU. Moments later, Stevens brought the runner from second in to score with an RBI single, but the damage was done and cost the Reddies the tying run.

That would prove to be the difference in the final score, as Henderson was unable to tie the contest over the last four innings. HSU put two runners on with no outs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings, but failed to score each time. The Reddies had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh with just one out, but two strikeouts ended it for UAM.

Weevils' starter River Hunt matched Baker nearly pitch for pitch throughout the night and got the win for UAM after going five innings, striking out eight batters and allowing one run on four hits.
