SET ONE
Arkansas-Monticello came into Steelman Fieldhouse with victory on its mind, staying one step ahead of the visiting Reddies, seeing an 11-8 lead early on. From there, UAM never trailed the rest of the way, building a 24-16 lead and standing one point shy of a 1-0 lead. Â Â
Â
After Monticello looked like it was going to run away with the opening frame, HSU was able to ward off seven set points with an improbable comeback looming. The eighth set point was the difference, giving UAM the first lead of the match, 25-23. The momentum, though, already appeared to have changed hands.
Â
SET TWO
Despite the loss, HSU took the rally from the end of the first set and brought it into the second as it secured the first four points, seeing an 11-1 scoring run from the close of the first set into the second.
Â
UAM put an end to the scoring barrage from the visiting Reddies, going on a 5-1 run to tie it up at 5-5. Henderson did not let the home crowd get too comfortable, though, opening up a 16-9 advantage, forcing the home team to call a timeout.
Â
The pause in play did little effect as HSU continued with a 9-6 run to close the frame at 25-15. With one set being taken by each team, play went into the third frame at 1-1.
Â
SET THREE
The second-set dominance proved to not be an anomaly for HSU as the third set held much of the same. Henderson was able to build to its biggest lead of the match at 19-9.
Â
Despite a last ditch effort from the Cotton Blossoms to take the 2-1 lead, the advantage was to be had by the Reddies as a 25-18 third-set victory gave them the 2-1 edge – one set away from a third conference victory.
Â
SET FOUR
Monticello had "fifth set" on its mind, scoring the first three points, maintaining a three-to-five lead halfway through the frame. With the score in favor of the host Cotton Blossoms, 16-11, head coach Phil McDaniel called a timeout with hopes to stall the momentum and not give the home crowd a fifth set.
Â
Unfortunately for the Reddies, the home crowd stayed involved as they urged their team on to a fourth set, 25-17 triumph, forcing a match-defining fifth set.
Â
SET FIVE
Henderson had just enough left in the tank, securing the first five points before Monticello called time in an attempt to stop the bleeding and salvage the match. A lengthy rally following the timeout went HSU's way as it the end was in sight off a 6-0 head start.
Â
The Reddies had one more score in them before UAM even got on the board at 7-1. The break in the scoring failed to trip up Henderson, however, as each team alternated scores until the scoreboard showed 15-10 in favor of HSU.
