Henderson Falls in First of Two Oklahoma Contests

BETHANY, Oklahoma – For the second time this season, Southern Nazarene shot 15+ more free-throws than Henderson as HSU fell inside the Sawyer Center, 63-41. The Reddies shot 26.9% from the field for the game while SNU shot 40%.

Karrington Whaley led Henderson with 11 points – 10 of which came in the first half – on 5-of-10 shooting as she was the only Reddie to score in double figures. Freshman Eryka Patton pulled down a career-high seven rebounds to pace HSU.

Both defenses were on full display through the first seven and half minutes of the first quarter, as the score stood in favor of SNU, 8-6. That was when the three-pointers started falling for the Crimson Storm, closing the quarter on a 7-3 run to take a 15-9 lead into the second period.

With the Reddies still within striking distance, every attempt HSU would make at closing the deficit, Southern Nazarene would respond with some points of its own and then some as Henderson was just a step behind SNU in the second with them slowly building to a double-digit lead.

Through the first 20 minutes, the Reddies shot 37.5% from the field and only 28.6% from three while Southern Nazarene was on fire from long range, shooting 60% (6-10) to fuel its 34-22 halftime advantage. Karrington Whaley led all scorers with 10 points, including two blocks, while Maci Mains followed with nine, who, for the second straight game, connected on her opening two treys.

Foul trouble plagues HSU in the second half as both Ashley Farrar and Gracie Raby committed their fourth fouls early in the third period. With two of the Reddies' top scorers on the bench, the Crimson Storm raced away with the contest.

Henderson got it back to within single-digits on two different occasions in the third quarter, but free throws for SNU and cold shooting from the Reddies kept any kind of comeback from becoming a reality. Southern Nazarene took the Thursday evening rematch, 63-41.

Henderson St. (12-7, 7-6) looks to not lose its place in the Great American Conference standings when it heads to Shawnee, Oklahoma, to take on Oklahoma Baptist Saturday, Jan. 29 at 1 p.m. In the season's first meeting inside the Duke Wells Center, HSU used overtime to survive a late Bison push, 94-80.
