Henderson Falls Late to Hot-Shooting OKBU

SHAWNEE, Okla. — Henderson State erased an early deficit and took the lead down the stretch on Saturday, but Oklahoma Baptist's Brantly Thompson scored 16 of his game-high 28 points in the last six minutes of the game to help the Bison hold on for a 90-81 win at the Noble Complex.

Alvin Miles led the Reddies with 17 points in defeat, while Franck Kamgain added 15 and Tomislav Miholjcic finished in double figures for the fifth-straight contest with 13 points.

Henderson (11-8, 7-6) trailed by just four at the break, 39-35, after closing the period on a 7-0 run thanks to a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Quawn Marshall. Marshall's shot capped off a momentum-swinging finish for HSU, who had trailed by as many as 12 points in the first period. The Reddies hit five of their first six shots to open the second half, but Oklahoma Baptist was just as hot, hitting four of its first five to keep its lead intact.

With the Bison in front 55-50 at the 12:34 mark, Henderson caught a break which helped turn the tide in its favor. OKBU's Harrison Stoddart hit a 3-pointer and a foul was called on what looked to be a potential game-changing four-point play, but it was determined the foul came away from the ball before the shot, sending the Bison to the line for a 1-and-1 and wiping three points off the board.

A could-have-been nine-point deficit for the Reddies was flipped quickly, as OKBU missed the front end and Henderson scored the next five points on baskets from Malik Riddle and Kamgain to tie the game at 55-55 with 10:43 remaining.

After tying it up, HSU took its first lead since the opening half moments later when Kamgain drilled a deep 3-pointer to put the Reddies up 64-62 with 7:02 to go. It was at that point that Thompson began to take over for Oklahoma Baptist. After the Bison lost the lead, the senior guard did not miss for the remainder of the game and scored 16 points on perfect 6-for-6 shooting, which included four 3-pointers, in a span of less than five minutes.

In spite of Thompson's offensive onslaught, the Reddies kept coming, and twice cut the deficit down to one possession. Both times, however, Thompson was there with a basket for the Bison to stop the Henderson rally and keep OKBU in front by at least two scores. His hot shooting proved to be the difference down the stretch, as Oklahoma Baptist was able to ice the game at the line and survive, 90-81.

Henderson out-scored the Bison 40-20 in the paint on Saturday and 38-18 in bench points. The Reddies turned the ball over just six times and shot 53.1% in the second half. OKBU shot 53.6% from the field for the game and hit 10 3-pointers compared to just five for HSU.

The Reddies return to action on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. when they go across the street to take on rival Ouachita Baptist in the second edition of the Battle of the Ravine.
