KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Henderson State leaves the Central Regional Challenge from Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri 1-1 after falling to Minnesota State Saturday afternoon, 84-64.
Junior transfer
Clarence King led all Reddie scorers with 13 points on 3-of-10 shooting from the floor.
Ryan Boyce and
Tomislav Miholjcic backed up King with 11 points each, including eight rebounds and two blocks for Boyce.Â
Neither team found much separation from the other as the first 14 minutes of game action saw six ties between the two teams. A go-ahead Maverick layup was met with a Boyce triple that put HSU ahead 25-23. Seconds later, with MSU taking a 27-25 lead, Kamgain knocked down a triple to give Henderson what would be its last lead of the contest.
Henderson held a 28-27 lead after 15 minutes of back-and-forth action before the Mavericks went on an 11-0 run to open up a 38-28 lead with 1:41 remaining in the first half. MSU added one to go into the locker room with the 43-32 advantage.
Minnesota State picked up where it left off to start the second half, scoring seven of the first nine points of the period. After the Mavericks extended their lead to 21 with a little under 10 minutes remaining, HSU tried to fight back, cutting the deficit back down to 14 at one point, but the momentum was too much on MSU's side, as the Mavericks maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Henderson State (1-1, 0-0) will return to the Duke Wells Center for its home opener against Arkansas-Fort Smith on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 4 p.m. Last year's game between the two Natural State schools saw UAFS win at the buzzer in overtime, 81-80.
