Reddies Down St. Cloud on Haskins' Late Homer

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Bryson Haskins hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth inning on Thursday afternoon and Henderson State defeated St. Cloud State 7-5 at Clyde Berry Field.

Haskins blast was the biggest of nine hits for the No. 18 Reddies, who improved to 4-0 on the year. Kaden Argenbright led HSU with two hits, two runs and two RBIs, while Greyson Stevens also had two hits and a double.

The Reddies got off to a quick start and scored a run in their first chance to bat on an RBI single from Cade Tucker. In front 1-0, Henderson padded its lead in the second inning when Argenbright ripped a two-run single up the middle and David Vilches came up with a triple to score Argenbright and make it 4-0. HSU took advantage of two walks and two stolen bases in the inning.

Following two scoreless frames, St. Cloud responded in a big way in the top of the fifth. The Huskies used three hits, including a two-run homer, as well as an error to score four runs and tie the game at 4-4.

Stevens came up big for the Reddies in the seventh when his two out-single scored Pate Fullerton to put HSU back in front, 5-4. The lead was short-lived, however, as back-to-back singles from St. Cloud to open the top of the eighth set up a sacrifice fly RBI and knotted the score one again at 5-5. The Huskies had a chance to take the lead and break the game open in the eighth, but Brayden Bebee stranded the bases loaded on a line out to end the top half of the inning.

After escaping a jam and gaining momentum, Henderson got a lead-off walk from Alec Lewis to start the bottom half. The Reddies' next batter to the plate was Haskins, who came up with the biggest swing of the day when he blasted a ball out over the wall in left center. The home run gave HSU the lead and the juice it needed, as Bebee was able to sit the Huskies down in order in the ninth and preserve the fourth win of the season for Henderson.

Bebee earned the win on the mound by pitching the final two innings and surrendering one run on three hits. Ethan Perry got the start for the Reddies and pitched a perfect first frame before Austin Cross came on and gave HSU four innings of work. Cross gave up four runs on four hits and struck out two. Andrew Howard also pitched two scoreless innings of relief for Henderson in the sixth and seventh.

The Reddies will be back in action tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. when they host Pittsburg State at Clyde Berry Field.
