Miles' Buzzer Beater Ends NWOSU Winning Streak, 72-69

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Alvin Miles hit a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer on Saturday as Henderson State knocked off Northwestern Oklahoma State 72-69 at the Duke Wells Center.

The win was the Reddies' 10th Great American Conference victory of the season and snapped NWOSU's league-leading seven-game winning streak. The Rangers had not lost in nearly a month prior to Saturday.

Four different players finished in double figures for HSU. Malik Riddle had a game-high 18 points while Miles added 16, seven rebounds and four assists. Franck Kamgain scored 13 points before fouling out in the game's final seconds and Xavier Davenport chipped in 11.

Henderson (14-9, 10-7) led 34-33 at the break despite shooting just 35.5% in the opening half. Riddle provided the Reddies a spark in the first 20 minutes by scoring 11 points and going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.

Northwestern Oklahoma opened the second period hot and used a 12-4 run to seize a 45-38 advantage at the 16-minute mark. Almost the entire rest of the half the Reddies spent trying to claw their way back. HSU got within two points at 53-51 with 10:22 to go, and at 61-59 on a Miles jumper with 4:28 left, but each time Henderson got close, NWOSU seemingly had an answer.

With 1:30 remaining in the game and the Rangers holding a 67-63 lead, the Reddies were finally able to break through. A jumper by Miles cut the deficit down to 67-65 and seconds later Riddle jumped a NWOSU passing lane and converted a layup in transition to tie the game, 67-67, with 1:05 to go.

The final minute proved to be a wild back-and-forth swing of emotions for both sides. Northwestern took the lead with a free throw at the 38-second mark, but left the door open for HSU by missing the second attempt. Miles capitalized with two free throws of his own on the other end, which gave Henderson its first lead in almost 20 minutes, 69-68, with 27 seconds left.

As time ticked down, it looked as though the Reddies had gotten the stop they needed on the defensive end, but a late whistle on Kamgain fouled him out of the game and gave NWOSU the opportunity to retake the lead with 11 seconds to go. For the second time in the last minute of the game, the Rangers failed to convert both free throws — this time missing the first shot. The 1-for-2 trip to the line knotted the score at 69-69 and gave HSU the game's final possession.

The Reddies, who had timeouts to burn, elected not to call one, and instead put the ball in the hands of Miles. The sophomore from Memphis delivered at the horn, as he nearly lost the ball on a dribble move, but regathered and drained a deep 3-pointer with just 0.4 seconds on the clock. The fractions of a second was not enough time for Northwestern Oklahoma, who's heave fell well short and set off the celebration in the Duke Wells Center.

Henderson out-rebounded NWOSU 39-30 in the win and saw its bench outscore the Rangers 42-14. The Reddies were an excellent 17-of-20 at the free throw line and also shot 9-for-20 (45%) from beyond the arc.

HSU returns to the court on Monday at 6 p.m. when it hosts East Central at the Duke Wells Center.
