ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State scattered 15 hits and took advantage of five Northwest Missouri errors to run-rule the Bearcats 16-6 in seven innings at Clyde Berry Field on Sunday. The victory stretched the No. 18 Reddies' season-opening winning streak to seven games.
HSU (7-0) had six extra-base hits on the day and drew seven walks off of Northwest's pitching staff. The Bearcats did themselves no favors, and committed five errors which led to eight unearned runs for Henderson.
Twelve different Reddies recorded a hit in the win. Jacob Carroll finished 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs, while both Kaden Agrenbright and Alec Lewis also had two hits.Â
David Vilches capped off a monster weekend by hitting his fifth home run in the last three games to drive in two. Vilches had five homers, seven hits, seven runs and 12 RBIs in HSU's four contests this week.Â
Nick Butler, who had three RBIs, hit the second home run of his career at HSU in the third inning. Nick Hagerty and Charles Hoof both recorded the first hits of their collegiate careers in the sixth and seventh, respectively.
Starter Ryan Galvan earned his first win of the year for the Reddies by pitching five innings and striking out seven. He surrendered one earned run on five hits and walked just one Bearcat batter.
Northwest Missouri went up 1-0 with a solo home run in the second inning on Sunday, but little else went wrong for Henderson in the game. The Reddies quickly took the lead with two runs in the bottom half of the second, then exploded for six runs in both the third and fourth frames to break the game open.Â
The Reddies bat around in both innings and scored a total of 12 runs on seven hits to take a commanding 14-2 advantage. HSU capitalized on five walks and four errors from NWMSU. The Bearcats changed pitchers three times in the third and fourth.
After mass substitutions on both sides, Northwest was able to get four runs back — two in both the sixth and seventh — but RBI hits from both Logan Cowart and Luke Farrar in the bottom of the seventh put the run-rule back into effect and won it early for Henderson.
HSU plays its first road game of the year on Tuesday when it travels to Clinton, Mississippi to face Mississippi College at 2 p.m.
