DURANT, Oklahoma – Henderson used a 27-11 fourth quarter to comeback and defeat Southeastern Oklahoma State, 57-49, marking the Reddies' first victory in Oklahoma this season. The win puts HSU above .500 in conference play at 10-9 and a two and a half game lead on ninth-place SOSU, pushing Henderson that much closer to a GAC Tournament bid.
Â
Ashley Farrar led the team with 13 points, all of which came in the second half, while
Sonni Martin had 12 points on 4-of-5 three-pointers, with two clutch treys in the fourth frame. Farrar hit both of her triples in the final frame as well to fuel the rally.
Â
On a night where Henderson only shot 24.5% from the field through the first three quarters, the high-powered Reddie offense came through in the final frame, hitting 69.2% (9-13) of their shots from the field in the last stanza. Henderson scored 24 points in the final 7:40 of the game compared to 33 points in the first 32 minutes and 20 seconds.
Â
Abbie Jiles scored the first five points of the game as HSU held a three to five point lead through the opening five minutes of the contest. With a four-minute scoring drought facing both teams, a 5-0 run to close the initial frame from the Savage Storm cut the lead to one, 11-10.
Â
Both squads saw single-digit second quarters as, prior to the under-five media timeout in the second quarter, Henderson had only managed three field goals, while the Reddie defense had held Southeastern to only two field goals, allowing HSU to hold a 18-15 lead with just over four minutes to play in the opening half.
Â
Henderson and SOSU exchanged a pair of free-throws with a Savage Storm jumper mixed in to send the game to break with HSU holding the slight 20-19 advantage, marking the lowest first-half total the Reddies had seen all season while holding Southeastern to a tie for the fewest first-half points allowed all season.
Â
In a third quarter that featured five lead changes, the second half opened like the first half did with Jiles hitting a lay-up for HSU's first points of the third to put HSU back on top, 22-21. After SOSU rattled off a quick three points to move in front, 24-22, an offensive rebound leading to a three-pointer from Martin put the Reddies back ahead, 25-24.
Â
The contest remained a back-and-forth battle until the Savage Storm opened things up with a 14-3 run to jump out to a 10-point lead. A
Maci Mains lay-in with two seconds left stopped the bleeding as the Reddies all of a sudden had an eight-point deficit facing them with the score reading 38-30 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Â
Henderson St. shot a combined 18.9% (7-37) from the field and 21.4% (3-14) from beyond the arc in the second and third quarter. The fourth quarter is when things started to change for the Reddies as the three-pointers began to finally fall for the visiting team.
Â
Martin started the final period knocking down back-to-back treys, split by a Farrar triple and a
Karrington Whaley and-1, to cut the deficit to three four minutes in, 45-42. The momentum had taken a drastic turn as HSU continued with a 7-0 run to see an overall 21-7 mad dash capitalized by a Pickens and-1 to move ahead by four, , 49-45, with just under four minutes remaining.
Â
A Southeastern bucket cut the lead back to two, but Farrar refused to allow the lead to be short-lived as the Green Forest, Arkansas, native made consecutive three-point plays – one from behind the arc and one old-fashioned way – to further extend the unprecedented lead, 56-49.
Â
Tough defense in the remaining two minutes of the game from the Reddies put the finishing touches on the fierce rally as HSU won its first conference game in the Sooner State on the season, 57-49. Henderson St. (15-10, 10-9) will look for its second state-of-Oklahoma win on Saturday when it heads to Ada, Oklahoma, to take on East Central Saturday, Feb. 19 at 1 p.m.
