ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — No. 18 Henderson State's hot start to the season carried over into conference play on Friday as the Reddies defeated Oklahoma Baptist 7-3 in the GAC opener for both teams at Clyde Berry Field.
With the win, HSU improved to 9-0 on the year. The Reddies will look to make it 10-consecutive victories tomorrow at 12 p.m. when they meet the Bison for a doubleheader.
The top four hitters in the lineup for HSU — Kaden Argenbright, David Vilches, Greyson Stevens and Cade Tucker — were phenomenal and combined to go 8-for-15 at the plate with three doubles and a home run. Vilches hit his sixth big fly of the year and drove in two runs, while Argenbright, Stevens and Tucker each recorded two hits.
Spencer Taack was terrific again for the Reddies and earned his third win in three tries. The righty pitched five innings, surrendered two runs on three hits, and struck out nine Bison batters. Ethan Perry was sharp in relief and threw three innings, allowing one run on three hits. Brayden Bebee struck out two to close the game out for HSU in the ninth.
Oklahoma Baptist scored in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead, but the Reddies scored two runs in both the second and third innings to seize a 4-1 lead after three. Both of HSU's runs in the second came off of an OKBU error with two outs in the inning.
The Bison's final two runs in the game both came on solo home runs in the fifth and the eighth, but each time Henderson countered with a run of its own in the bottom half to maintain a comfortable advantage.
In both the sixth and the eighth innings, OKBU brought the tying run to the plate, but a groundout ended the first threat and a big double play turned by Fullerton and Tucker wiped out the Bison in the latter.
In addition to their 10 hits as a team, the Reddies drew three walks, were hit by pitches three times, and took advantage of two errors to consistently create traffic on the base paths for OKBU. Henderson stranded eight runners but also got off to great starts and was 5-for-8 leading off innings. The Bison had six hits in the contest, which marked just the second time this year they've had fewer than 10 in a game.
