ADA, Okla. —
Quawn Marshall poured in a career-high 26 points on Saturday and Henderson State raced past East Central 90-71 on the road at the Kerr Activities Center.
The win improved the Reddies to 16-10 overall and 12-8 in Great American Conference play with only two league contests remaining in the regular season.
Marshall was nothing short of phenomenal, particularly in the first half, for HSU. He had 23 of his 26 in the first 20 minutes, where he shot 8-of-10 from the floor and a sizzling 5-for-6 from beyond the arc.
Alvin Miles scored in double figures for the ninth-straight game and added 14 for Henderson, while
Yuri Swinford had 12 and
Franck Kamgain chipped in 11.
The Reddies shot 50.7% in the game and a scorching 56.7% in the second half on Saturday. Henderson was 11-for-20 from the 3-point line and limited the Tigers to just 4-of-22 shooting on the other end.
With HSU in front 17-13 at the 11:10 mark of the opening half, the Reddies put together the run that gave them an insurmountable advantage. Henderson used four 3-pointers, including three by Marshall, to go on a 22-6 run over the next eight minutes and seize a 20-point lead, 39-19. ECU closed the gap to 41-26 at the break, but the damage was done and the Tigers never recovered.
East Central got within 12 points at the 13:41 mark of the second when a jumper made it 54-42, but Henderson responded with another huge run. The Reddies caught fire over the next six minutes and put together a 23-11 run to extend their lead to 77-53 — the largest of the game. HSU never led by less than 20 again, as it pulled away for a convincing road victory.
Marshall's 26 points were the most by a Reddie in a single game this season and his 23 at halftime would have also qualified been the top mark this year. Henderson trailed 2-0 after the first basket of the game by ECU and then never fell behind again.
The Reddies return to the court on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. when they face Arkansas Tech in Russellville.
