ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State was unable to pick up a win on the first day of the 2022 HSU/OBU Tournament, dropping a twin bill to No. 20 Texas A&M-Kingsville and Christian Brothers, 10-2 and 9-3, respectively.
Â
Abbie Moore finished off the two-game day with four hits – a pair in each outing – along with four total RBIs thanks to a two-run bomb in the contest against TAMUK.
Brooke Johnson followed with three hits of her own on the day.
Â
Henderson St. (0-11) returns to Dee White Field tomorrow to face Midwestern State at 10 a.m. in what will be the Reddies' last game of the HSU/OBU Tournament.
Â
Game 1: No. 20 Texas A&M-Kingsville 10, Henderson State 2
After falling to the Javelinas in Portland, Texas, as part of the Portland Tournament, Henderson threatened early on to jump out ahead while the game was still young. With nothing happening for either team in the first inning, HSU gave a lone run to TAMUK in the top of the second before HSU looked to make some damage.
Â
The bottom of the second started with Moore hitting a single followed by a double to right center from
Ashlyn Taylor, the Reddies had a runner on second and third with only one out facing them. An unfortunate double-play, however, on the ensuing batter left HSU wanting more as play moved to the third inning.
Â
The missed opportunity stayed with Henderson the rest of the way as the Javelinas took advantage, scoring four runs in the top of the fourth frame. With the scoreboard reading 8-0, Moore stood in the gap of the shutout, working a 13-pitch at-bat ending in a home run that brought in
Britlyn Garrett, who pinch-ran for Johnson after she delivered a double.
Â
The sign of life was too little, too late, as No. 20 Kingsville brought the run-rule into effect with a two-run double in the top of the fifth as HSU was unable to extend play with the game finishing at 10-2. Â Â Â Â Â
Â
Game 2: Christian Brothers 9, Henderson State 3
The Lady Bucs went to work quick and often, scoring six runs before HSU had any response. A double from
Monica Monreal in the bottom of the third stopped the onslaught momentarily, scoring
Lexi Trejo, who had reached on an error earlier in the frame, to make the score 6-1.
Â
Every time HSU had a response, CBU came with more firepower as the Lady Bucs saw three more runs to the Reddies' two, both of which were brought in by Moore, as Christian Brothers came away with the seven-inning 9-3 victory.
