HSU Falls in Single Game Against No. 20 Javelinas

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - After playing three games as part of the 2022 HSU/OBU Tournament, Henderson State played a stand-alone game against the No. 20 Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas Monday afternoon. After keeping it close through four innings, TAMUK broke it open in the fifth, taking the third game between the two programs this season, 10-2.

Abbie Moore logged a pair of hits as she now has three multi-hit games in the last four outings for the Reddies. Brooke Johnson logged the only RBI for HSU on the afternoon by way of a sacrifice fly to score the aforementioned Moore. Monica Monreal claimed her team-high 11th hit of the season in 13 games played.

With Johnson getting the start in the circle, the first two Kingsville batters grounded out to Johnson to hand Henderson two quick outs. The next Javelina to the plate saw a two-out single as she would score two batters later to register the game's first run, 1-0. The Reddies were able to strand two runners, however, with a grounder to third base to end the haIf-inning.

Henderson was unable to offer any answer in its first at-bat, yet still kept the No. 20 team in the country in check for the most part, allowing another lone run in the top of the second. The game appeared to be getting away from HSU in the third when two more hits plated another two runs for the visiting team, but the Reddies forced TAMUK into its first no-run at-bat in the top of the fourth, which is when HSU found a bit of an opening.

Back-to-back singles from Moore and Monreal in the bottom of the fourth led way for Johnson to send a sacrifice fly to left-field, scoring Moore for HSU's first run of the game. Two batters later, a Javelina throwing error allowed Britlyn Garrett, who pinch ran for Monreal, to come home as the deficit was cut to two, 4-2.

After being held scoreless in the fourth, TAMUK returned to its scoring ways, rattling off three runs and three hits to see a 7-2 lead, which would eventually become a 10-2 advantage in the sixth. With the run-rule-required eight-run lead in effect, a quick three up, three down for HSU in the bottom of the sixth spelled the end of the game.

Henderson St. (1-12) begins conference play this weekend when it hosts the Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm in a single game on Friday, Feb. 25 at 5 p.m. before a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 26 beginning at 12 p.m.
