Softball Drops Two on Opening Day

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State fell in a pair of contests against Northeastern State and Southwest Baptist on day one of the Hawkins-McGhee Memorial Tournament. In back-to-back games, HSU lost to NSU, 8-0, and then SBU, 5-1.

Ashlyn Taylor, Monica Monreal and newcomer Madison Treutlein all claimed two hits on the day with Taylor being the only to claim a hit in each contest, including a double in the first game. Monreal and Treutlein each registered two hits in the latter game of the doubleheader.

Game 1: Northeastern St. 8, Henderson St. 0
Head coach David Martinez rolled out a starting lineup that featured five brand new Reddies who were all making their HSU debut. The young lineup took one on the chin, falling 8-0 to the Riverhawks.

Savannah Carrigan was working in the circle through four innings as the score stood 0-0 before NSU sent a home run over the left center wall to go up 1-0. That bit of separation was all Northeastern needed as it went on to score two in the next at bat, and then five in the final offensive showing to take the contest, 8-0.

Game 2: Southwest Baptist 5, Henderson St. 1
In game two of the day, it was HSU who got on the board first as Abbie Moore sent a sac fly out to centerfield in the bottom of the third to score Kaitlyn O'Quinn from third, who, after registering a single and then stealing second, advanced to third off a Savannah Hughes sacrifice bunt.

It did not take long for SBU to respond, however, as the Bearcats scored on their next at bat off their own sacrifice fly to centerfield to make the score 1-1. Henderson threatened to retake the lead later in the bottom of the fifth, but left three Reddies on base to go into the sixth with the tally still tied at one.

Like Northeastern in the top of the seventh, SBU broke the game open in one showing, scoring four runs in the top of the sixth to take a commanding lead, 5-1. Henderson was able to see one more hit the rest of the night, unable to gain any ground on the Bearcats who left Dee White Field with the 5-1 victory.

Henderson St. (0-2) returns for day two of the Hawkins-McGhee Memorial Tournament tomorrow morning, beginning with Cameron University at 9 a.m. and then Emporia State to follow. Both games will be played at Dee White Field.
