ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State shot 50.7% (35-69) for the game and 45.8% from beyond-the-arc, including 57% in the first quarter, as the Reddies snapped its three-game losing streak to the tune of 96-72 Saturday afternoon.
Â
Four HSU players scored in double figures, led by
Ashley Farrar with 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting and 4-8 from deep and hitting on all three of her free throws.
Gracie Raby followed with 15 points as
Maci Mains and
Karrington Whaley rounded out the double-digit contributors with 11 and 10, respectively.
Â
Sonni Martin was brilliant in navigating that Mulerider press all afternoon as she tied her career-high with nine assists while nabbing four steals and grabbing five rebounds.
Abbie Jiles also saw a career-high nine points on a perfect 4-4 shooting on the evening.
Â
The Reddies came out with a different kind of energy on the afternoon. After SAU scored the first two points of the game, HSU did not trail again the rest of the period, using a 7-0 run around the three-minute mark to build a 19-10 advantage. After four straight from the Muleriders, a Jiles trey with 23 seconds left gave the Reddies the 22-14 lead going into the second.
Â
Free-throw shooting allowed Henderson to even grow that lead as a 13-2 run that took up four minutes of the second 10-minute stint bolstered the lead to 17 with 1:55 to go in the first half, 40-23. The Muleriders were able to make a slight dent in the deficit before the break as HSU went to the locker room up 44-30.
Â
Back-to-back three-pointers from Raby and Farrar to open the second half foreshadowed what was to come in the final 20 minutes as the Reddies used a 28-point third period to grow its lead to 25, 72-47, before SAU closed on a 5-0 run to head into the fourth down 20, 72-52.
Â
Jill Thomas' squad was not content, however, with the 20-point advantage as the first eight points of the final frame came from the HSU bench as
Tamia Templeton hit back-to-back buckets and
Maci Mains and
Jadah Pickens hit consecutive jumpers to give HSU its biggest lead of the contest at 28, 80-52.
Â
Over the final eight minutes of the game, the Reddie offense scored 16 more points to post its third highest point total this season as HSU treated the home crowd to a 24-point, 96-72 victory, getting revenge on the Muleriders. Â
Â
Henderson St. (13-8, 8-7) will now look to string some wins together when the Reddies head over to Ouachita Baptist to take on the Tigers in a rescheduled contest, Monday, Feb. 7 at 5:30 p.m.
