ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State shortstop
Pate Fullerton hit a walk-off home run to dead centerfield on Sunday afternoon to lift the Reddies to a 2-1 victory over Northwest Missouri State in 10 innings at Clyde Berry Field.
Fullerton's shot was just the second home run of his college career and his first in over two years. He finished 1-for-3 at the plate for HSU, who scattered seven hits as a team.
Henry Coppens earned the win after escaping a jam in the top of the 10th and stranding two Bearcat runners in scoring position. It was the first win of his career at Henderson State.
Cade Tucker, who spent all of last season as a reliever, gave the Reddies a tremendous start and allowed one run on two hits in six innings. Tucker struck out six batters and walked just two.
Ethan Perry and
Andrew Howard combined to throw three scoreless innings of relief in the seventh, eighth and ninth frames.
Northwest Missouri used two singles and a fielder's choice groundout to open the scoring in the fourth inning and take a 1-0 lead. The Bearcats threatened in the seventh, eighth and tenth, but left seven runners on base and did not score again in the game.
Henderson tied things up in the seventh using only one hit.
Alec Lewis led off the inning with a double and back-to-back deep fly outs from
Bryson Haskins and
Dillon Thomas allowed pinch runner
Jordan Rusnak to scamper home and knot the score at 1-1.
After two scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth, Coppens shut the door on a threat from Northwest with a strikeout to end the top of the 10th. With one out in the bottom half, Fullerton got a hold of a pitch and drove the ball into the deepest part of the park. The ball carried just far enough to get over the wall and set off a wild celebration at home plate.
The Reddies return to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. when they host Delta State at Clyde Berry Field.
