ARKADELPHIA, Ark. –
Brooke Johnson and
Monica Monreal both sent one over the wall in the afternoon contest, but it was not enough as Cameron defeated Henderson St. for the second consecutive day, 9-5. Yesterday, the Aggies defeated HSU, 7-3.
Â
In each contest, the Reddies registered season-high eight hits. In the latter of the two contests, it was
Brooke Johnson who had the hot bat, registering two hits, one of which was a three-run home run, and four RBIs.
Crysta Larey matched Johnson with two hits of her own after not seeing a single hit through her three appearances prior to today's contest.
Â
Henderson threw three pitchers on the afternoon, with
Savannah Carrigan getting the start and
Erika Bittinger finishing the game off while
Krystal Lindsey split the two slingers. Bittinger claimed five strikeouts while only giving up one hit and one run to lead the HSU bullpen.
Â
The Reddies showed a lot of fight Monday afternoon, seeing the most early-on action of any game this season. After Carrigan held Cameron without a hit in the top of the first, an Aggie error to get lead-off hitter
Savannah Hughes to first got things started for HSU.
Â
Four batters later, after a Monreal walk, Johnson saw her first home run of her young career, giving Henderson the early 3-0 lead with the three-run center-field bomb. The Reddie lead for the home team got the Aggies' attention as they responded with two runs of their own in the top of the second.
Â
Henderson was unable to extend its lead in the bottom of the second, giving Cameron the opening to tie up the contest, 3-3. The Reddies were not done, however, and neither was Johnson, as she delivered a two-out double in the bottom of the third, scoring
Justine Burch, who reached via a walk three batters earlier.
Â
Seeing its second lead of the game at 4-3, as it did when facing its first deficit, CU responded and then some, rattling off five runs off three HSU pitchers before all things were said and done to establish an 8-4 advantage. The score would remain as such until the sixth inning.
Â
Cameron added one insurance run in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly to push the lead out to five, 9-4. Monreal offered one final jab at the deficit with her own home run over the left field wall to cut the margin to four. That shot led to
Kenzie Stotts and
Lexi Trejo making their way to second and third on the following two at-bats.
Â
With one out facing the Reddies, back-to-back strikeouts stranded Stotts and Trejo as undefeated Cameron left the 2022 Hawkins-McGhee Memorial Tournament with a win, 9-5. Henderson St. (0-5) will now head south to Portland, Texas, for the Portland Tournament Feb. 12-13 as it will face Texas A&M-International in the opening contest.
