Late Home Run Sinks HSU, Reddies Fall in Twin Bill

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State fell to Delta State in a doubleheader Wednesday, 4-0 in the first game and 9-6 in the second contest after a fierce comeback fell just shy. The pair of losses gives DSU the season series, taking three of the four contests after splitting in the season's first doubleheader between the two programs.

Madison Treutlein was terrific in game two of the day, going 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs. Bre Jones owned the best-hitter honor in game one, going 2-for-3 at the plate.

Henderson State (7-26, 4-10) hosts Southwestern Oklahoma State this weekend in Dee White Field for a three-game weekend series, beginning with a doubleheader Friday, Mar. 25 and a solo game Saturday, Mar. 26.

Game 1: Delta State 4, Henderson State 0
Starting pitcher Savannah Carrigan only allowed two hits through four innings, but the Lady Statesmen managed one run out of it while HSU had only seen one hit in that time. Delta St. doubled its run total in the top of the fifth, extending its lead to 3-0.

The bats eluded Henderson the rest of the way, with one hit plaguing the Reddies in the first six at-bats, to which DSU added one final run in the top of the seventh to build the lead to four with the HSU having one final chance to mount the unprecedent comeback.

Two batters in and Henderson had doubled its hit total up until that point, with Jordyn Holland started off the final at-bat with a single before Brooke Johnson logged her team-leading ninth double of the season to give HSU two runners. A Jones bunt loaded one batter later the bases as the tying run came to the plate with no outs facing the Reddies.

With the comeback becoming more and more a reality, Lexi Trejo reached on a fielder's choice for the first out of the frame as Delta's pitcher connected with the catcher to get Holland out at the plate. The Lady Statesmen followed that defensive stand with a 4-3 double play to snatch the Reddies' hopes, taking game one of the doubleheader, 4-0.

Game 2: Delta State 9, Henderson State 6
A pair of two-run homers from Delta State kept up the momentum for the Lady Statesmen from game one as the Reddies found themselves down 4-0 before play had its first three outs. A double play, as it did to end game one, kept HSU from cutting into the deficit in the early going of the backend of the doubleheader.

Both pitchers held the other squad from adding any runs until the fourth inning. After a two-run single for DSU to open up a 6-0 advantage, the Henderson bats finally got going as three hits yielded two runs, capped off with a two-RBI double to center field from Monica Monreal to cut the lead down to four, 6-2.

Henderson continued to cut away at the lead with a third run in the bottom of the fifth off one of Treutlein's four hits, scoring Jordyn Holland. Delta St. was able to extend its lead back to four in the top of sixth, 7-3, but the Reddies' efforts looked to pay off in bottom of the sixth, rattling off three runs on one hit with three batters getting walked.

Hopes were high with play moving into the seventh and the score reading 7-6, but a two-run homerun with one out put the Lady Statesmen just out of reach, dashing any chances of a comeback Henderson may have had, escaping with the 9-6 win.
