Henderson's Season Ends in GAC Quarterfinal Loss to SNU

SHAWNEE, Okla. — Henderson State led at halftime on Friday in the GAC Tournament quarterfinals, but Southern Nazarene outscored the Reddies 26-14 in the final 12 minutes of play to pull away and advance, 69-58.

The loss ends the season for HSU, who finishes with a final record of 17-12 overall. Tomislav Miholjcic and Ryan Boyce each had 11 points to lead the Reddies.

The lead changed hands seven times in the opening 20 minutes, but Henderson held SNU to 33% shooting from the floor and got eight first half points from Miholjcic to carry a 28-27 lead into the break. HSU was 1-for-10 from beyond the arc in the period, but out-scored the Crimson Storm 20-12 in the paint.

A big swing in momentum came at the start of the second half when Miholjcic picked up his fourth foul. The Crimson Storm quickly took advantage and attacked the rim to open up a 41-37 lead with 15:10 remaining.

The Reddies answered with a 7-2 run behind baskets from Tim McDonald, Malik Riddle and Alvin Miles to go in front 44-43 with 12:43 left, but that would be the final lead of the game for HSU.

After Miles' bucket to regain the lead, Henderson went cold and did not make another field goal for over five minutes. Once again, SNU capitalized, and used an 11-0 run to seize the game's largest lead, 54-46, with 7:52 to go.

Henderson refused to go away and put together a 9-2 run behind five points from Franck Kamgain to once again get within a basket, 56-55, at the 4:12 mark. Down by just one point, another untimely cold spell hit the Reddies, as they went the next three-plus minutes without a basket from the floor.

The final cold shooting streak proved to be too much to overcome, as the Crimson Storm scored the next eight points and were able to ice the game at the free throw line to advance to Saturday's semifinal round.

HSU shot just 35.5% from the field in the second half on Friday and finished the game 3-of-19 from beyond the arc. SNU out-rebounded the Reddies 43-32 and made 13 more free throws.
