ARKADELPHIA, Ark. –
Savannah Carrigan (1-3) claimed her first win of the season while
Erika Bittinger saw the first save of her career to give Henderson State the split on the day's twin bill.
Savannah Hughes led the Reddies at the plate for the day, seeing a two-game total four hits. Both
Crysta Larey and
Justine Burch each also claimed a hit in both contests, while
Abbie Moore saw her most action in game two of the day, going 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two walks.
Henderson St. (5-16, 3-3) will remain in Arkadelphia, but play its first road conference games when it heads across the street to Ouachita Baptist to take on the 5-14, 1-5 Tigers Tuesday, Mar. 8 in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
Game 1: Arkansas-Monticello 10, Henderson State 1
The scoring came a little bit later than it did in game one of the weekend series in the doubleheader's front-end contest, as UAM did not score until the second inning, where it saw three runs. After the Reddies left two on base in the bottom of the second, Monticello held the 3-0 lead after the first pair of innings.
That was the closest HSU would get to plating a run until the fifth inning, only seeing one more base runner over the next two at-bats while the Blossoms took full advantage, putting together seven more runs over the next three at-bats to claim the 10-0 advantage.
Henderson attempted to extend play into a sixth inning, as a
Savannah Hughes two-out single down the right field line brought home the first Reddie of the afternoon. Despite the ensuing batter for HSU getting walked, loading the bases, a third out by way of the Blossoms' second baseman ended play early, 10-1.
Game 2: Henderson State 5, Arkansas-Monticello 3
Both teams only saw one hit through the first two innings as both HSU's
Savannah Carrigan claimed three of her game-total seven strikeouts through the opening pair of frames. The Blossoms doubled their hit total in the top of the third with two base knocks, but a catcher-to-second-to-first caught stealing left the Reddies unscathed.
With the scoreboard still reading 0-0 with play moving to the bottom of the fourth, Henderson opened things up with four runs and five hits, with
Ashlyn Taylor getting things started with a double only to score two batters later courtesy of a two-RBI
Bre Jones single to right field. Moore matched Jones with another two-RBI single to bring the lead to 4-0.
Monticello was able to respond with three runs of its own in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to one before
Erika Bittinger was brought in to replace Carrigan in the circle. Bittinger was able to maintain the slight lead, keeping UAM scoreless in the top of the sixth despite allowing three hits, opening the door for the Reddies to add a single insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.
With Henderson holding the 5-3 advantage, Bittinger once again kept UAM from rounding the base pads, striking out the inning's lead-off hitter while forcing the next two batters into groundouts to claim the first save of her young career while Carrigan earned her first win of the season.
