Hooten Wins 300th Game in Sweep of East Central

ADA, Okla. — Henderson State shutout East Central 5-0 on Saturday afternoon to sweep the weekend series with the Tigers and give head coach Cody Hooten the 300th win of his career at the school.

Hooten, who is already the winningest coach in program history, entered his 12th season with the Reddies at 271 career victories. HSU's 29th win of the spring, which improved the Reddies to 29-12 overall and 18-9 in GAC play, helped him become the first skipper in school history to eclipse 300 wins.

Henderson's pitching was excellent in the series finale and allowed just three hits to East Central. Cade Tucker earned the win by pitching five innings and allowing the three base hits. Tucker struck out seven batters and walked only one. Ethan Perry, Henry Coppens and Austin Cross combined to throw four no-hit innings of relief to close it out for HSU.

The Reddies scored in the first to take a 1-0 advantage, then broke things open with a four-run fourth inning. An RBI double from Greyson Stevens, as well as RBIs from David Vilches and Nick Butler helped Henderson capitalize on two walks and a hit batter and seize a 5-0 lead. That proved to be the margin of victory, as HSU allowed ECU just one baserunner in the final five innings.

Vilches had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Reddies at the plate, while Stevens also drove in two runs. Kaden Argenbright walked three times and scored twice.

With the win, Henderson is now in sole possession of second place in the GAC with just two conference series remaining in the regular season. One more victory will give the Reddies their eighth 30-win season in program history.

HSU returns to action on Tuesday night when it takes on rival Ouachita Baptist in a midweek, non-conference game across the street at 3 p.m.
