Reddies Edge OKBU with Second-Straight GAC Tournament Walk-Off

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. — No. 2 seed Henderson State walked off for the second-straight day at the GAC Tournament on Sunday as Colton Patterson drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the 11th inning to send the Reddies to the league semifinals with a 3-2 victory over No. 6 Oklahoma Baptist.

With the win, HSU (37-14) advances to the single elimination portion of the conference tournament. Henderson will play either UAM, Harding or Ouachita tomorrow at 7 p.m. with the winner earning a trip to the GAC Tournament Championship game at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Reddies got terrific pitching for the second day in a row. Starter Ryan Galvan went six innings and surrendered just two runs on eight hits to earn a no-decision. Andrew Howard earned the win with marathon relief performance. Howard, who struck out three batters and walked none, threw five innings and gave up no runs on just two hits. Through 20 innings of postseason play, HSU has used just four pitchers going into Monday.

Dillon Thomas led Henderson at the plate and finished 3-for-5 with a home run. Greyson Stevens and David Vilches each had doubles for the Reddies, who had seven hits in the game to Oklahoma Baptist's 10.

HSU jumped in front in the first on an RBI sac fly from Vilches, and that 1-0 lead held up until the fifth, when the Bison tied it on a two-out run-scoring single.

In the bottom of the sixth, Thomas gave the lead back to the Reddies on a solo home run, but OKBU answered again with a deep fly of its own in the seventh to knot the score at 2-2.

Henderson had opportunities to win the game in the late innings, but stranded two runners in the ninth and grounded into an inning-ending double play in the 10th. The Bison got their go-ahead run to second base in the top of the 10th frame, but Howard induced a pop out from OKBU's clean-up hitter to end the threat.

After Oklahoma Baptist stranded a runner in the 11th, the Reddies finally capitalized on their chance to close it out. Base hits to leadoff the inning from Cade Tucker and Vilches led to a dramatic play at the plate for pinch runner Spencer Taack, but Taack was thrown out trying to score for the first out of the inning.

Despite the bang-bang play going against them, Henderson proceeded to draw two walks and loaded the bases with two outs. With the bases juiced, the pinch hitter Patterson was called upon for HSU. Patterson did his job and worked a seven-pitch walk to earn the game-winning RBI for the Reddies and send them to the semifinals.
