Henderson Falls to SAU on the Road

MAGNOLIA, Ark. -  Henderson State came up short on the road against Southern Arkansas, losing 3-1. SAU won the first set dominantly, but the Reddies responded by winning set two, though it would not be enough with the Muleriders taking the next two frames. The Reddies have now lost three consecutive GAC matches for the second time under head coach Phil McDaniel.
 
Junior setter Skylar Fernandez recorded her fourth double-double of the season, accumulating 11 assists and ten digs. Jacey Trupper and Kaitlyn Sykes led the defense on the net with six and four blocks, respectively. Sykes also finished with six kills, third most behind Christiane Uzoh and Carson Edwards, who tallied 15 and eight kills, respectively.  
 
The Reddies(7-10, 1-4 ) stay on the road, traveling to Shawnee, Okla., to face Oklahoma Baptist next Thursday at 6 p.m.
 
SET ONE
The Muleriders started the scoring, but the Reddies responded to every attack, tying the set at 5-5. A four-point run from SAU gave them some breathing room, leading 9-5, and continued to expand on its advantage after a six-point run, up 16-8. The Muleriders would see out the rest of the set, winning 25-13.  
 
SET TWO
The Reddies came out strong after being held in the first set to take a 6-1 lead, forcing an early timeout from the Muleriders. HSU continued to dominate the second set, adding to their advantage with a four-point run, going up 12-3.
 
Southern Arkansas attempted to close the gap with a four-point run, but Henderson scored three points in a row to counter the Mulerider's attack. SAU would shorten HSU's advantage to three points after a flurry of attacks to trail 20-17.
 
A three-point run by the Reddies was quickly followed by a four-point run from SAU, bringing the score to 24-23. A costly error from Southern Arkansas gave Henderson the final point of the set, winning 25-23.
 
SET THREE
Back-and-forth set three went early, with both teams unable to create any separation. At 7-7, Southern Arkansas struck with a flurry of attacks to take a 14-8 lead. The Muleriders kept a sizeable advantage on the Reddies, up 19-13, and in complete control, won set three 25-19.
 
SET FOUR
Henderson took an early four-point lead to open the set. The Reddies carried their lead to 14-11 after a pair of kills from Uzoh and Edwards. HSU and SAU went point for point, but Henderson kept a three-point advantage, up 21-18.
 
Southern Arkansas was soon down 23-18,  but the Muleriders rallied with a seven-point run to win the set 25-23 after trailing the entire frame.
