DURANT, Okla. –
Violeta Mendoza Quintana posts her ninth double-double of the season as Henderson State defeats Southeastern Oklahoma State 3-1 in the Bloomer Sullivan Gymnasium.
HSU (15-6, 6-2) had three players reach double-figures, led by Mendoza Quintana and
Christiane Uzoh, who logged 17 kills each, while
Jagoda Szybinska had ten. In addition, Medoza Quintana recorded 17 digs, a service ace and a block.
Trinity Sharp led the back row, logging a team-high 30 assists, while
Larkin Luke and
Brae Denton locked down the net with seven combined blocks.
Nathalie Van and
Madison Hatt were the conductors of the HSU attack, with 28 and 25 assists, respectively.
SET ONE
A quick start by HSU saw them jump out to a 6-1 lead after a service ace by Hatt and a kill from Uzoh. Three kills by Szybinska kept the Reddies in front 11-9, but the Savage Storm battled back to tie the frame 12-12. The set went back and forth with four ties and two lead changes, with HSU and SE locked at 20-20.
Neither side could find a breakthrough as they continued to go point for point before Henderson had to defend a Southeastern Oklahoma State set point as the Savage Storm took a 24-23 lead. The Reddies took a timeout, and after the break, Uzoh tied the frame 24-24 with a kill and tallied two more on the way to a 27-25 set win.
SET TWO
Southeastern Oklahoma State wasted no time in the early exchanges of the second set, racing ahead 10-4. SE kept up the pace, taking a nine-point lead, 18-9. After weathering the storm, Henderson went on a 7-1 run to cut the deficit to three, 19-16. Mendoza Quintana provided two kills, while Szybinska and Denton each recorded one. The Savage Storm attack proved too much as they scored six of the final nine points of the set to win 25-19.
SET THREE
Three kills by Uzoh had the Reddies in front 6-4 in the opening ten points. Henderson stretched its advantage to 12-6 on a 4-0 run that featured kills from Mendoza Quintana
Mia Sanchez and Luke.
SE got within two points of HSU, 14-12, but the red-and-gray responded with a 3-0 run to grow its lead to 17-12. HSU closed out the frame on a 5-1 run that was capped off by an attack error by the Savage Strom to go ahead 2-1 in the match after a 25-19 set win.
SET FOUR
SE held the early lead in the fourth set after a 3-0 stretch, 6-4. A 7-0 run by HSU saw the red-and-gray retake the lead 11-6 after four attack errors by the Savage Storm. The Reddies continued to dominate the fourth set, stretching their advantage to 22-11 with three kills from Mendoza Quintana and two more by Luke. Another two kills by Menodzoa Quintana closed out the final set 25-15 and sealed a 3-1 win for the Reddies.
Henderson State (15-6, 6-2) is back in action tomorrow against East Central at 4 p.m. in the Kerr Activities Center.
