ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State looks to complete the season sweep over Arkansas-Monticello when they welcome the Cotton Blossoms on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the Duke Wells Center.
REDDIES REPORT
HSU (17-9, 8-5) had to defend off a late rally by Arkansas Tech, which saw the Golden Suns take the third and fourth sets after HSU opened the match by winning the first two frames. The Reddies closed the door on the comeback with a 15-7 set win in the fifth stanza.
Four different Reddies reached double-figure kills in the win, led by
Christiane Uzoh with 17, and now has 259 kills on the season.
Violeta Mendoza Quintana recorded 16 kills and added 16 digs for her tenth double-double, while
Brae Denton and
Jagoda Szybinska combined for 26 kills. HSU racked up a season-high 71 kills as a team, which is the most recorded against a conference opponent across the GAC this season.
Madison Hatt saw her 11
th double-double, matching her season-high in assists with 31 and 12 digs, while
Nathalie Van recorded her fifth double-double, recording 25 assists and ten digs. The pair have split time at setter, as Hatt leads the team on 485 assists, which is the third time in successive years the junior has tallied 450 assists. Van in her second season with the Reddies, has set a season-high with 368 assists across 86 sets.
Each match becomes more important as the season winds down, with teams fighting for a spot at the GAC Tournament. There is a three-way tie for first as Southwestern Oklahoma State, Oklahoma Baptist and Harding are all 10-3 and have already clinched a spot. Following the trio of leaders, HSU and Southern Arkansas are tied at 8-5, with Ouachita Baptist and Southeastern close behind at 7-6, while East Central rounds out the top eight at 6-7.
Henderson State eyes the season sweep over Arkansas-Monticello after defeating UAM 3-0 on the road earlier this season. In the first match,
Mia Sanchez and Denton led the team with seven kills and three blocks, respectively, in a dominant win at the Steeleman Fieldhouse. Heading into the 37th meeting, HSU leads the all-time matchup 23-14 after its latest win.
SCOUTING ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO
The Cotton Blossoms enter Thursday's contest looking for their first win of the season, as the team is 0-25 overall and 0-13 in conference matches. UAM most recently fell to Southern Arkansas on the road 3-0. This season, Arkansas-Monticello has won just four sets, with its last set win coming against Southeastern Oklahoma State on Oct. 6.
The Blossoms' offensive effort is spearheaded by Jasmine Welton and Abrielle Jordan, who lead the team with 157 and 115 kills, respectively. Pulling the strings in attack, Jordan Wehr and Bruna Silva have split setter duties, as Wehr leads the team with 218 assists, and Silva has 196. Arkansas-Monticello is averaging 8.14 kills per set on a .023 attack average this season.
