ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - In Henderson State's highest scoring game in regulation since Nov. 18, 2019, the Reddies treated the home fans to a home-opening, 114-60 victory over Lyon College Thursday night.
All 13 HSU players scored in the rout as the 54-point victory is Henderson's sixth largest margin of victory in program history and the biggest point spread in a win since the 2002-03 season when HSU defeated Central Baptist, 123-67.
Six Reddies scored in double figures, led by
Malek Davis with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting while tyingÂ
Clarence King and
Zyon Patterson with a team-high three assists.
Tomislav Miholjcic recorded his first double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
As a team, HSU shot 65.2 percent (43-of-66) from field, serving as the red-and-gray's highest single game field-goal percentage in the
Jimmy Elgas era. Aiding the high percentage was Henderson's paint presence, outscoring Lyon in the paint, 64-28.
To go with the offensive onslaught, Henderson's defense held the Scots to 37.3 percent (22-of-59) shooting and 25 points in the first half. The Reddies forced 25 turnovers with
Kristian Spencer leading the way with three steals.
Both offenses struggled in the early going with the home team holding the slight 7-6 lead four and a half minutes into play. From there, the defense and offense began clicking for Henderson, posting a 15-2 run until the second media timeout, including making nine consecutive field-goals.
Now with a 22-8 lead, HSU extended that to 23 before play settled around the 20-point deficit, while consistent shot making as the opening half drew to a close helped the Reddies hold a 53-25 lead at the break.
The trademark Henderson defense highlighted the first part of the second half as Lyon did not score its first points in the second 20-minute stint until the 16:32 mark of the second half. With the defense keeping the Scots on lockdown, Henderson's lead ballooned to 45 at the halfway point of the second half.
The red-and-gray's last little spurt down the stretch with eight straight points from
Ken Lewis and
Courtlon Crow gave HSU its biggest lead of the game at 110-52 before the game went final at 114-60.
The Reddies (1-2) will return to the Duke Wells Center Wednesday, Nov. 22 at 4 p.m. when they host Bacone College in the final game prior to Thanksgiving.
