Farrar sank a triple to put the Reddies on the board, but the Gorillas offense kept up the pace, stretching their lead to 19-7. Back-to-back layups from Brynlee Huggins sparked a late charge as Farrar connected on her second three-pointer in the quarter to keep Henderson within striking distance at the end of the first period, 23-20.

Allen quickly tied the game at 23 all to start the second quarter on a three-pointer, but another strong start by Pitt State would see the Gorillas jump back on top 30-23 on a 7-0 run. The Reddies leaned on Allen for the next two minutes as the sophomore guard sank two triples and a layup to pull HSU within one, 34-33.

The two sides traded shots from deep before Allen made her fourth triple of the period and later a jumper to tie the game at 41-41. A 6-2 burst by the Gorillas would see Pitt State leading at the halftime break 47-43. Allen paced the side in the opening 20 minutes with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field and was 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.

The Gorillas stretched their lead at the start of the second half with a 6-2 run before Cardenas made two quick baskets, including a three-pointer, to pull HSU back within four of the Gorillas, 54-50. Pitt State replied with a 6-0 run before closing the stanza on an 11-0 stretch to take a 71-55 lead into the fourth period.
