Reddies Fall in Final Regular Season Match at Southern Arkansas 3-1

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Henderson State volleyball falls on the road in Magnolia, Ark. in the final regular season match to the Muleriders of Southern Arkansas 3-1. HSU (19-10, 10-6) will now turn its attention to the first round of the GAC Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 16 in Hot Springs, Ark.
 
Violeta Mendoza Quintana paced the side with a team-high ten digs and 25 digs for a double-double. Madison Hatt led the team with 19 assists and added 18 digs to her totals, while Nathalie Van had 14 assists and 17 digs. The Reddies' attack logged 50 kills on a .122 attack average compared to SAU, who hit .175 a clip with 63 kills.
 
SET ONE
Henderson State and Southern Arkansas went back and forth as they traded the first 14 points and were tied 7-7. SAU broke the deadlock with a 4-0 to take an 11-8 lead, forcing HSU to use its first timeout. The Muleriders stretched their advantage out the break to 18-11 before scoring five of the set's final seven points to win 25-16.
 
SET TWO
The Reddies fell behind early at the start of the second set as the Muleriders raced ahead to a 10-3 lead. After the flurry of attacks, a kill by Brae Denton sparked an HSU 6-1 run that cut SAU's lead down to three, 11-9. The Reddies would pull within one after kills by Jagoda Szybinska and Jacey Tupper, but the Muleriders grew their lead to 18-12 after a 5-0 run.
 
Two kills by Mendoza Quintana and Denton kept the Reddies in striking distance of SAU, 20-18, but the Southern Arkansas attack would prove too much as they outscored HSU 5-3 to win the second frame 25-21.  
 
SET THREE
The opening exchanges of the third stanza saw five ties before Uzoh, Mia Sanchez and Mendoza Quintana each recorded a kill to give HSU an 11-7 lead. The Reddies took advantage of four straight errors by SAU to stretch the team's advantage to 16-8, forcing Southern Arkansas to use its first timeout.
 
Out of the break, a pair of kills by Mendoza Quintana pulled the Reddies ahead 20-13. The Muleriders would provide late pressure, cutting HSU's lead to 23-20 and fending off a set-point, but Mendoza Quintana slammed down the final kill of the frame to give Henderson State its first set win 25-21.
 
SET FOUR
A slow start by the Reddies saw Southern Arkansas strike first, taking a 6-3 lead. HSU settled into the frame through a kill by Szybinska and a service ace from Dani Dagley, sparking a 4-0 run that pushed HSU ahead 7-6. From there, the two teams went back to trading small leads with SAU in front 16-13.
 
HSU found some rhythm on a 4-0 run that started with a kill from Larkin Luke to take the lead 17-16. The Reddies held a slight edge over SAU through the next rallies as a pair of Mulerider attack errors had HSU ahead 23-21. A late charge by the Muleriders saw SAU score four straight points to win the final frame 25-23 and take the match 3-1.
