LAS VEGAS, Nev. - 20 lead changes were not enough to decide a winner in regulation between Henderson State and No. 7 Central Oklahoma at the High Desert Classic, with the Reddies forcing their first overtime contest of the season. Unfortunately for HSU, the lead remained with UCO for the entirety of the extra period as the Bronchos triumphed, 86-72.
Clarence King led the HSU offense with 19 points for his seventh consecutive double-digit scoring outing, while also adding six rebounds and three assists, second only to
Malek Davis' five dimes. Davis,
Tomislav Miholjcic and
Chase Farmer each contributed 11 points.
The Reddies were out-rebounded 52-35 on the afternoon, including 20-4 in second-chance points. The Bronchos used a 9-0 second-chance scoring advantage in the first half to remain within striking distance of a five-point Henderson State halftime advantage.
Two of the top defenses in each team's respective conferences were on full display through the early going, with the first points of the contest not coming until the 17:18 mark. After Henderson delivered its fist basket 36 seconds later, six lead changes shaped the opening 10 minutes.
A King three-pointer for a 21-18 lead gave the Reddies the offensive jump-start it needed. The red-and-gray proceeded to go on an 8-4 run to claim the biggest lead of the game on either side at the 4:59 mark of the first half, 29-22. With the Bronchos closing the deficit to two, a five-point spurt in the final minutes helped HSU take a five-point lead into the break, 36-31.
Henderson St. shot 46.4 percent from the floor and 62.5 percent (5-for-8) from three-point range in the first 20 minutes, compared to Central Oklahoma shooting just 34.3 percent from the field and 7.7 percent (1-for-13) from behind the arc.
Central Oklahoma's shooting woes in the first half were quickly forgotten with UCO hitting four of its first six field-goals in the first three and a half minutes of the new period, claiming its first lead since the 7:40 point in the first half, 41-40. The new-found consistent shot-making of the Bronchos allowed them to open their biggest lead of the game at 49-43.
As did UCO with HSU's first-half advantage, the Reddies began to chip away before retaking the lead at 54-53 with nine and half minutes remaining in regulation. The lead continued to go back-and-forth before Miholjcic tied it up at the free-throw line just under a minute remaining, 67-67. Moments later, on a dead-ball offensive rebound for the designated visitors, Miholjcic found Davis under the basket for the go-ahead layup with 39 seconds left.
The nation's No. 7 team responded in turn with a layup of its own before an HSU three-pointer came off the back iron to send the contest to overtime. The former-No. 3 team in Division II prevailed in the extra period, outscoring the Reddies 17-3 across the additional five minutes for the 86-72 victory.
After shooting just 34.3 percent in the opening half, UCO made 20 of 36 field-goal attempts (55.6%) in the second half and overtime. The Reddies made just 33.3 percent (12-for-36) of their second-half and overtime attempts, including going 0-for-7 from the field in the extra period.
Henderson St. (3-5, 2-2 GAC) will return to Desert Oasis High School tomorrow at 2 p.m. to take on the Pittsburg State Gorillas, who will be looking for their second win of the two-day tournament after defeating Truman State Monday, 94-88.
