Mississippi College Downs HSU Amidst Strong Winds

CLINTON, Miss. - Henderson State battled strong winds all night, recorded just eight hits compared to the Choctaw's 16 Tuesday afternoon as Mississippi College snapped HSU's three-game winning streak, 18-8. The mid-week showdown held eight total home runs, five of which came off MC bats.

For the second time in three games, the Reddies logged a grand slam, this time courtesy of Luke Farrar, who ended his outing with two hits and four RBIs. Luke Rice, who was responsible for the first four-run homer in the three-game span, recorded his team-leading second home run of the season.

Mississippi College started fast, using the wind to its advantage, delivering four hits, including three extra-base knocks with two of them being home runs, to score seven runs in the first inning. From there, Henderson was left playing catch up. Farrar put HSU on the board with his grand slam in the second frame only to have the Choctaw respond with three more runs in the bottom half of the inning to bring the score to 10-4.

The Reddies made another jab at the lead in the third after Rice sent his two-run homer down the right-field line to cut the deficit to four, 10-6, but once again, a Mississippi College home run kept the lead out of reach as MC added another three runs in the bottom of the third. Such was the theme of the rest of the night with the Choctaw never allowing HSU to get within more than seven runs.

Before it was all said and done, Mississippi College scored a final four runs in the bottom of the sixth open an 11-run lead. A single run in the top of the seventh off of Rice's bat brought the score to 18-8, but that was it as the game was retired early, 18-8.

Henderson St. (5-3) will return home where Great American Conference play awaits them when the Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs come to Clyde Berry Field for a three-game series beginning Friday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m.
