ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State dominated Southeastern Oklahoma State from start to finish Thursday evening, posting its second largest margin of victory against a conference opponent in the GAC era, 106-72.
The 34-point thrashing made head coach
Jimmy Elgas the second winningest coach in program history, surpassing Rand Chappell with 121 career victories.
All 12 men on the roster scored in the beat down as five Reddies tallied double-digit points.
Franck Kamgain led the onslaught with 19 points to go with five rebounds and five assists.
Zyon Patterson and
KJ Stewart secured a season-high 17 and 16 points, respectively. As a unit, HSU recorded 27 assists – the most in a single game since Nov. 18, 2019. That was also the last time the red-and-gray scored 100 points in regulation.
Henderson's offense delivered a near flawless first couple of minutes, jumping out to an 11-0 lead with assists on three of its first five field goals, calling for an early Southeastern timeout two minutes and 18 seconds into the game. The Reddies continued to function at a high rate, establishing a 26-7 lead before SE's second called timeout at the 12:41 mark.
The lead steadied out over the next over the next three minutes until, with a 35-18 advantage,
Josh Mason went on a personal 5-0 run that opened up Henderson's largest lead with 8:55 remaining until halftime, 40-18. Defense took over as neither team scored a field goal for the next two and a half minutes before a lay-up from the Savage Storm made it 40-22.
Both teams traded baskets the remaining six minutes of the first half to send HSU into the locker room with the 49-30 advantage. Henderson held Southeastern to its second lowest first-half score in a conference game this season while the Reddie offense went 21-of-42 from the field, including 6-of-13 from three while the Savage Storm made just three of 18 deep balls.
Fear of any let-down into the second half was quickly eased as HSU turned a Patterson block into a
Malik Riddle fast break layup that sparked an 8-2 run to bring the tally to 57-32. Southeastern responded with its first big run of the game, scoring the next nine points to cut the deficit to 16 just before the first media timeout of the second half.
Out of the break,
Tim McDonald snapped the spurt with a triple off one of
Alvin Miles' eight assists, followed by a Stewart layup and a Mason three to reestablish a 24-point lead, 65-41, as the Reddies would not be denied on the night. Another 9-2 run, capitalized by a Stewart and-1, delivered HSU its largest lead of the game with 10:38 left to play, 74-43.
Henderson built the lead to as much as 35 when a Mason fast break dunk gave the home team 98 as the red-and-gray could sniff its first 100-point outing in regulation of a conference game since Feb. 21, 2019. The coveted triple digits were attained from
Neil Rice's first three of the season with 1:10 on the clock as the home bench erupted. A final triple from
Ken Lewis completed the dominant performance, 106-72.
Henderson St. (12-13, 9-10) will play two more games at home before finishing the 2022-23 regular season at Harding. The third-to-last game comes this Saturday, Feb. 18 at 3 p.m. against the East Central Tigers.
