SEARCY, Ark. — A big run at the start of the second half helped Henderson State run away from Harding on Saturday night as the Reddies defeated the Bisons 99-75 to close the regular season.
HSU has won six of its last seven games and will be the No. 6 seed at the GAC Tournament next week in Shawnee, Oklahoma. The Reddies will face No. 3 seed Southeastern Oklahoma State at 8 p.m. on Friday in the opening round.
Five players scored in double figures for Henderson and 10 different Reddies scored in the win. Zyon Patterson and Malik Riddle each had 18 while Alvin Miles finished with 14 points and nine assists.Â
Little separated the two sides in the first half on Saturday night. The game was tied five times in the opening 20 minutes and each team had a lead as large as six points, but it was Henderson who finished the period with a flourish. Alvin Miles scored HSU's final six points in the last 2:40 of the half to give the Reddies a 41-36 advantage at the break in front of a raucous crowd.
Henderson opened up its largest lead of the game to begin the second half, as a 16-5 run, punctuated by a thunderous Zyon Patterson dunk, stretched the Reddie advantage out to 57-41 at the under 16-minute media timeout. HSU hit six of its first nine shots to begin the period, which included two 3-pointers from Patterson.
The timely run turned the tide in the Reddies' favor and the Bisons never recovered. The closest Harding came again was 14, as HSU opened up a lead as large as 26 points and cruised to a 99-75 win.Â
Henderson out-scored Harding by 19 in the second half and shot 54.5% from the field in the final 20 minutes. Every player on the team saw at least three minutes of game action for Henderson and Tomislav Miholjcic hit the first 3-pointer of his career in the final minutes.
