Softball Tripped Up by Missouri Southern 4-1

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State fell to Missouri Southern 4-1 on the final day of the Hawkins-McGhee Memorial Tournament. HSU finished 2-2 in the tournament with wins over Missouri Southern and Northeastern State on day two.

MSSU got on the board early in the top of the first, but it would only last an inning as leadoff hitter Josie Copeland blasted a home run over left centerfield to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second.

The Lions tacked on another run in the top of the third when a MSSU runner advanced to home on a throw to first base. The Reddies had runners on first and second in the bottom half but could not advance them any further as the inning ended with a pop fly to right field for the third out.

A pair of errors by Henderson in the top of the fifth led to Missouri Southern doubling its lead to 4-1. Kaitlyn O'Quinn made it first on a throwing error but would later be called out when she left the base too early while trying to steal to end the fifth. MSSU would hold on in the final two innings to win 4-1.

O'Quinn and Copeland were the Reddies' most productive hitters, with both going 2-3 at the plate. In the circle, Katelyn McMahan got the start and lasted 5.0 innings, giving up seven hits and four runs. Brooke Johnson came in for relief and pitched the final two innings and gave up zero hits and had two strikeouts.

Henderson State (2-2, 0-0) heads to Bentonville, Ark. to participate in the Bentonville Tournament, where the team will face six teams over three days, starting with Lincoln Missouri at 11 a.m. and Central Missouri at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10.
