SEARCY, Ark. - Facing a 2-0 deficit heading into the seventh inning, Henderson State rattled off back-to-back three-run innings to win the series finale against Harding from Jerry Moore Field, 6-4. After falling in the series opener, HSU won two straight contests over the Bisons to win its fifth conference series of the season.Â
The Reddies (21-13, 12-9 GAC) threw five pitchers in the series-clinching contest as
Ethan Roark earned the win in 1.2 innings of relief after
Reese Weaks started out on the bump. Roark held HU hitless while claiming three strikeouts, followed by
Payton Byrd,
Mitchell Szczygiel and
Cade Tucker who each pitched one inning to help lead the red and gray to victory.
Luke Farrar (3-for-4) and
Kaden Argenbright (2-for-5) led Henderson at the plate while Farrar added two RBIs to his day. Fort Scott Community College-transfer
Louis Holt delivered one of his best performances as a Reddie, using a two-out single to score a pair of runs to fuel the comeback. Holt also worked a walk and a stolen base to put the finishing touches on his performance.
It was a pitchers duel through the first four innings as Henderson went hitless while the Bison saw three hits in that time. Harding was able to put some runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runs despite not putting the ball into play. That 2-0 lead was maintained through the sixth frame before HSU saw its most action up to that point in the seventh.
After an Argenbright single and a
Charles Hoof walk opened the frame, Farrar delivered one of his three hits for an RBI-double. After a Bison pitching change, Holt sent his single to put Henderson ahead for the first time in the game, 3-2.Â
Byrd was able to uphold the lead with his appearance in the home-half of the seventh, giving up a lead-off hit before sitting down the next three Harding hitters in order. Henderson used the quick inning to fuel its second consecutive crooked number off four hits and two errors from the home team. An Argenbright single followed by a Hoof double, Farrar single and
Jacob Carroll double established the four-run lead, 6-2.
It was Szczygiel's turn to occupy the mound in the eighth as the score remained untouched until the final half-inning. For the second time in the series, Tucker closed the final inning. After a Harding home run cut the lead down to two, the right-arm hurler stranded an HU base runner after forcing a ground-out to claim the series.
Henderson St. will stay away from Arkadelphia for a couple more days when it faces Arkansas-Monticello on the road in a midweek contest Tuesday, Apr. 4 at 3 p.m. The Boll Weevils will then turn around and come to Clyde Berry Field this weekend for a three-game series beginning Friday, Apr. 7 at 6 p.m. Â
