WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Henderson State splits the doubleheader against Southwestern Oklahoma State, winning game three of the series 5-4. The Reddies finish the season 19-30 overall and 11-22 in Great American Conference play.
Abbie Moore ended the day with six hits, five RBIs, five runs scored and two home runs.
Brooke Johnson also had a big day at the plate, recording five hits and three RBIs.
GAME ONE: SWOSU 10, HSU 9
HSU led 4-1 after four frames, scoring a run in the first and third innings before two more crossed in the top of the fourth. However, after Johnson held the Bulldogs to two runs in five innings, SWOSU plated five in the bottom of the sixth to take its first lead of the game, 7-4.
The Reddies responded with five runs of their own in the top of the seventh, re-establishing their advantage to 9-7. The inning began with singles by
Isabel Robinson and
Justine Burch, followed by a double from
Abbie Moore that brought in two runs, cutting SWOSU's lead to 7-6. Three more hits by Johnson,
Crysta Larey and
Josie Golden scored three additional runs to put the Reddies ahead, 9-7.
Southwestern Oklahoma State added two more runs to its score in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game 9-9 and force extra innings. The Bulldogs hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth to take game one of the doubleheader 10-9.
Moore went 3-4 at the plate with three runs batted in and three runs scored, while Johnson was 2-4 with three RBIs. In addition, Johnson pitched 7.1 innings and allowed five runs on five hits, and had three strikeouts.
GAME TWO: HSU 5, SWOSU 4
Henderson trailed early in the series finale 2-0 in the bottom of the first after a quick start by the Bulldogs. Southwestern Oklahoma added to its lead in the following inning, scoring one run to extend its advantage to 3-0.
Moore put the Reddies on the board in the top of the third with a lead-off solo shot to cut SWOSU's lead to 3-1.
Jorika Alvarez plated a second run in the frame off a sacrifice bunt to score Johnson, who reached on a double to right center field, 3-2. The Bulldogs would score a run in the bottom half of the inning to lead 4-2.
Two scoreless frames went by in the fourth and fifth innings before the Reddies plated three runs in the sixth. HSU had runners on second and third with one out after
Jay Albiter hit a single and
Justine Burch reached on a dropped fly ball. Henderson took the lead 5-4 on the next at-bat as Moore hit a three-run home run over the left field wall.
Presley Applegate secured a win with two scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh. The freshman stranded a runner on third in the bottom of the sixth and retired the side in order in the seventh. Applegate improved to 3-5 after pitching the final 5.0 innings and surrendering just one run on five hits.
