ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Off the back of a five-set win over Ouachita Baptist in the Battle of the Ravine, Henderson State looks to keep the momentum going as the team gets set to co-host the annual Reddie-Tiger Invitational on Sept. 15-16. Over the two days, eight matches will take place in the Duke Wells Center, while six will be played in the Sturgis Physical Education Center.
The Reddies begin day one on Friday, Sept. 15, with two matches starting at 12 p.m. against Christian Brothers and at 6 p.m. versus Union. Saturday, HSU will face (RV) Alaska Anchorage at 1 p.m. and Truman State at 5 p.m.
REDDIES REPORT
Henderson State's win streak grew to six matches after Tuesday's come-from-behind win over Ouachita Baptist. The Reddies trailed 2-1 in the match, but
Christiane Uzoh would explode in the fourth set, recording eight kills to stretch the contest to a fifth frame. Uzoh continued to have the hot hand in set five with seven more kills as HSU went on to win 3-2.
Uzoh paced the attack in the OUA match with a career-high 23 kills on a .391 attack percentage, surpassing her previous high of 20 kills set last season against East Central. Through the first nine matches, the Beaumont, Texas native is hitting .236 with 74 kills and has 22.0 total blocks, averaging 0.85 bps.
Madison Hatt and
Violeta Mendoza Quintana recorded their fourth and third double-doubles this season in the win over the Tigers. Hatt supported the offense with 31 assists and was second on the team with 11 digs. Mendoza Quintana hit for 11 kills on 23 attacks and had a team-high 20 digs.
HSU looks to extend its win streak over Christian Brothers to five in the first match of the Reddie-Tiger Invitational. Henderson and CBU have met 43 times, and the Reddies lead the series with 23 wins. Last season, the two sides met during the Union Invitational, where HSU defeated CBU 3-2, led by Uzoh, who had 17 kills and five blocks.
The Reddies eye revenge in their next match, facing Union for the sixth time. Last year, the Lady Bulldogs bested HSU 3-0 in the Union Invitational to go ahead in the all-time series 3-2. Henderson's third match will be a first-time meeting between the Reddies and the Seawolves of Alaska Anchorage.
HSU concludes the tournament with a match versus Truman State in the 15
th meeting between the two sides. TSU leads the series 13-4 and has won the last five matches, including a win in Arkadelphia during 2004. This will be the first time the two teams have faced each other since 2011.
SCOUTING CHRISTIAN BROTHERS
The Lady Bucs are looking to get back to winning ways after dropping their last four matches. CBU went 0-4 in the Washburn Invitational, where they faced No. 15 Washburn, Missouri Western, William Jewell and No. 18 Northwest Missouri. Christian Brothers' lone win this season came against Arkansas-Monticello in the Blossom Classic Invitational.
SCOUTING UNION
The Lady Bucs enter Friday's match against Henderson State with a 1-7 record after finishing the Missouri S&T Classic 1-3. Union opened the tournament with a sweep over Kentucky Wesleyan before falling to Missouri S&T, Lake Superior State and Emporia State. Leading the UU attack is sophomore right-side hitter Sydney Whittaker and junior middle blocker Jordan Moore. Whittaker has a team-high 56 kills, while Moore has 50 kills on a .261 attack percentage.
SCOUTING (RV) ALASKA ANCHORAGE
Alaska Anchorage makes its first-ever trip to the Natural State this weekend to participate in the Reddie-Tiger Invitational. The Seawolves come into the tournament with a record of 5-7 and recently got its first conference win against Alaska Fairbanks. UAA started the year ranked 21
st but recently fell out of the polls after losing its last three matches.
The Seawolves are led by senior outside hitter Nicole Blue, who has 133 kills through the first 12 matches and is averaging 2.89 per set. Blue also leads the team with 24 service aces and 135 digs. Setter Makena Eleneki is averaging 6.11 assists per set and leads the squad with 281 assists.
SCOUTING TRUMAN STATE
Truman State (3-5) has already matched its win totals from last season with three wins in its first eight matches. The Bulldogs opened the year with three victories at the Blossom Classic Invitational, defeating Arkansas-Monticello, Christian Brothers and Maryville. Since then, TSU has lost its last four matches after competing in the Hampton Inn Invitational. The Bulldogs are led by senior outside hitter Hanna Berry, sophomore setter Emma Baierl and sophomore libero Lexi Arnel.
