MONTICELLO, Ark. – Henderson State (12-5, 4-1) gets its fourth conference win of the season after defeating Arkansas-Monticello 3-0 in the Steelman Fieldhouse on Thursday afternoon.
The HSU attack had 32 kills on 89 attacks to finish the match with a .247 attack average, while the defense held UAM to a -.075 attack average and 30 attack errors. The Reddies had six service aces to the Blossoms' three and out-blocked Arkansas-Monticello 9-3.
Mia Sanchez led the attack with seven kills, while
Christiane Uzoh and
Violeta Mendoza Quintana combined for 11.
Larkin Luke and
Brae Denton commanded the net with three and two total blocks, respectively. The offense ran through
Madison Hatt, who led the team with 13 assists and also had four kills and three service aces.
SET ONE
The Reddies scored five of the six opening points, forcing UAM to use an early timeout. Henderson added to its lead after the break with a service ace from Mendoza Quintana and two attack errors by the Blossoms, 8-2. Back-to-back solo blocks by Luke and three kills by Mendoza Quintana stretched the Reddies' advantage to 17-4.
Henderson cruised to a 25-10 set win after two kills by
Skye Johns wrapped up the frame. The HSU attack hit .250 a clip, led by Mendoza Quintana with three kills, while the Blossoms were held to a -.171 attack average.
SET TWO
The score was tied at 4-4 after the two sides traded 3-0 runs. The Blossoms broke the deadlock with two straight points before kills by Uzoh and Sanchez locked things back up at 6-6. Arkansas-Monticello found another breakthrough with a 4-0 run to go ahead 10-6, but the Reddies battled back, taking the lead on a 6-1 tear that featured six errors by UAM, 12-11.
From there, HSU held a two to three-point margin over the Blossoms before taking its largest lead of the set after a kill by Sanchez, 21-16. Arkansas-Monticello would cut the Reddies' advantage to one on a 6-1 stretch, 23-22. Back-to-back points for the red-and-gray by Mendoza Quintana and a UAM attack error gave HSU the set win, 25-22.
SET THREE
Henderson dominated the early exchanges in set three, jumping ahead 6-0 before UAM used its first timeout. Uzoh and Mendoza Quintana each had a kill, while Hatt served an ace. The Reddies did not slow down after the break, extending their lead to 12-1, and the Blossoms would be forced to use their final timeout.
Jagoda Szybinska and Sanchez logged two more kills apiece as HSU led 18-6. The Reddies closed out the final frame on a kill by Luke to win the set 25-15.
Henderson State returns to action with back-to-back home matches versus Southwestern Oklahoma State and Northwestern Oklahoma State, beginning on Thursday, Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. against SWOSU, then NWOSU on Friday at 4 p.m.
