ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – On the second day of the Bettye Wallace Invitational, Henderson State dominates in a sweep over Western New Mexico with set wins of 25-13, 25-11 and 25-19.
HSU (5-2, 0-0) held the Mustangs to an attack average of .020, including negative attack percentages in the first two sets, while the Reddies' offense fired on all cylinders with a .309 attack average. In addition, Henderson had 11 different players record a kill, led by
Larkin Luke and
Jagoda Szybinska with seven each.
SET ONE
The Reddies put Western Mexico under pressure early in the opening moments, jumping ahead 7-1. Back-to-back kills by Uzoh and a kill from Mendoza Quintana would extend HSU's advantage to eight, 16-8. Uzoh continued to have the hot hand in the set, recording two more kills, giving HSU its largest lead of the frame, 22-10. From there,
Cassidi Campbell and
Jacey Tupper recorded two of the final three points to win the opening frame, 25-13.
SET TWO
Henderson dominated the first exchanges in the second set, racing ahead to an 11-1 lead.
Mia Sanchez, Luke and Uzoh each had a kill, while Western New Mexico registered six attack errors. Three more kills off the hand of Luke grew the Reddies' advantage to 16-7 and later 17-9 after a kill from
Skye Johns.
Brae Denton capped off a 5-1 run at the end of the frame with two kills to win another dominant set, 25-11.
SET THREE
Hatt set the tone early in the final set with back-to-back service aces to open the exchanges. Soon after, a kill from Sanchez and two more by Szybinska would double Western New Mexico's score 6-3. Szybinska had the hot hand in the third frame with four more kills and a total of six in the set. HSU went 8-1 run, extending its lead to 17-10.
The Mustangs cut Henderson's lead to three after a 4-0 run, but the Reddies were quick to respond with back-to-back kills from Tupper, 21-16. The set would end on a service error and bad set by WNMU as HSU went on to win 25-19 and complete the sweep.
Henderson State plays one more match tomorrow on the final day of the Betteye Wallace Invitational at 3 p.m. against Lane College inside the Duke Wells Center.
