Farrar Becomes Programs Leading Scorer in HSU’s Win

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – At 4:44 in the second period, Ashley Farrar knocked down her second three-pointer of the game to become the highest scorer in program history (1659). Henderson State went 10-12 from the free-throw line in the final quarter to hold on to a 75-69 win over Southeastern Oklahoma State.
 
Farrar paced the scoring with 23 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field and went 9-of-12 from the charity stripe. Makenna Winans had a big second half for the red-and-gray, recording 13 points and 12 rebounds on her way to a double and finished with a season-high 15 boards. HSU (9-6, 5-4) shot 38.0 percent from the field and 26.0  percent from beyond the arc while going 23-of-28 at the free-throw line and outrebounded the Savage Storm 48-37.

Southeastern Oklahoma State opened the scoring, but it was all Henderson for the next two minutes, as a three-pointer by Brynlee Huggins capped off a 7-0 run to take the lead 7-3. The two sides traded baskets until the Savage Storm tied the game at 13 all with a triple, and later took the lead on a 5-0 run, 18-15. The Reddies trailed 21-20 at the end of the period after Farrar made it a one-point game at the free-throw line.
 
Olivia Allen helped push HSU ahead in the first minute of the second period with five straight points to give the Reddies a 25-21 lead. Southeastern closed the gap to one on its next three possessions, but HSU replied with a 9-0 run capped off by a three-pointer from Farrar to stretch the lead to ten. Two late three-pointers with under a minute till half by the Savage Storm would trim HSU's lead to 40-38 at the break.
 
Farrar led the scoring after the first half with 16 points, as the team shot 40.6 percent from the field and 23.5 percent from beyond the arc. Southeastern leaned on its perimeter shooting in the opening 20 minutes, making eight triples on 50.0 percent shooting from deep.
 
Southeastern Oklahoma State owned the first five minutes of the third period, taking a 49-42 lead after an 11-2 run. Turnovers plagued the Reddies in the third period, as they had five in their first seven possession, trailing 49-44. Winans helped provide some footing for HSU in the final two minutes of the period with a layup and two made free throws to trim SE's advantage to 55-51 at the end of the quarter.
 
The Reddies tied the game at 57 all in the first four minutes of the period after Winans had four points part of an Henderson 6-0 run. HSU eventually took the lead 64-59 through an Allen triple and two more free throws from Winans. The two teams traded baskets, as HSU held a two-point margin before a three-pointer by Huggins sparked a 7-0 run to provide some breathing up 73-64 with twenty-five seconds remaining. The Reddies remained in control for the final seconds on their way to a 75-69 victory.
 
Henderson State (9-6, 5-4) will host East Central on Saturday, Jan. 20, at 1 p.m. in the Duke Wells Center.
