ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State dominates all four periods in its 20-point victory over Oklahoma Baptist, 74-54, to improve to 7-5 overall and 3-3 in GAC play.
HSU put together a complete performance in its win, shooting 42.6 percent from the field and 42.4 percent from beyond the arc, and outrebounded the Bison 31-24.
Ashley Farrar led the scoring with 24 points and finished shooting 6-of-7 from the floor and 4-of-5 from deep and added a team-high six assists to her totals.
Natalie Cardenas and
Brynlee Huggins recorded 14 and 10 points, respectively, and both finished with three triples each.
The Reddies attacked from the perimeter early and often, as Cardenas knocked down two triples in the first two minutes to push HSU in front 8-2. A four-minute scoring drought by both sides was cut by a three-pointer by
Olivia Allen, followed by the team's fourth trey of the period from
Jadah Pickens to give Henderson a 14-8 edge at the end of the first period.
In the second quarter, HSU carried over its hot shooting, opening the stanza with a 10-2 run, featuring three-pointers by Farrar and
Tori Gittens to stretch the team's advantage to 24-10. The Bison replied with a 6-0 burst, but the Reddies kept in front with four points by
Makenna Winans to re-establish Henderson's double-digit lead 30-16. Farrar drained her second three-pointer of the period to close the half with a 37-20 lead over the Bison. Farrar led the scoring at the break with 12 points while HSU shot 46.4 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from beyond the arc on 18 attempts.
Farrar opened the scoring in the second half, making her third three-pointer of the contest before converting two shots at the free-throw line to extend the Reddies' lead to 42-24. Huggins joined in on the scoring, making back-to-back triples as part of an 8-0 burst to give Henderson State its largest advantage of the game, 50-25. Oklahoma Baptist cut the Reddies edge to 19 after a 5-0 run, but a Cardenas three-pointer and Farrar layup would make it a 24-point game again. The Bison closed out the final minute and a half on a 4-0 run, as HSU led 56-36 through three quarters.
Oklahoma Baptist opened the fourth period with a triple, but the Reddies quickly replied with a three-pointer from Farrar, followed by
Sam Basson for her first points of the game. The Bison cut Henderson's lead down to 14 after an 8-2 burst, but HSU matched OKBU with a 6-0 stretch to go ahead 71-51. Huggins put the finishing touches on a 20-point win, knocking down the team's 14th triple of the game with 20 seconds left to seal a dominant 74-54 victory over Oklahoma Baptist.
Henderson State (7-5, 3-3) hits the road for a pair of games in the Sooner State, beginning on Thursday, Jan. 11 at 5:30 against Southwestern Oklahoma State, followed by No. 19 Northwestern Oklahoma State on Jan. 13 at 1 p.m.
