HSU Uses Fourth Quarter Surge to Defeat OKBU

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Henderson State outscores Oklahoma Baptist 21-7 in the fourth quarter to grab a late win over the Bison 63-56 inside the Nobel Complex.

HSU (13-6, 9-4) opened the final period on a 13-0 run which would tie the game and eventually give them the lead. From there, the Reddies closed out the contest, going 6-of-6 from the charity stripe to seal the win. Henderson finished 16-of-22 at the foul line and shot 33.3 percent from the field and 40.7 percent from beyond the arc.

Ashley Farrar led the team with 16 points and was 9-of-10 at the free-throw line while adding three rebounds and two assists to her totals. Tori Gittens was 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and ended the game shooting 50.0 percent from the field with 15 points and five rebounds. Jadah Pickens continued her scoring streak with 13 points and recorded a team-high five assists. Bobbi Bazzle led the team at the glass with 12 of HSU's 41 rebounds.

Two quick three-pointers from Pickens and Farrar gave HSU the early advantage 7-4 to start the first period. The following five minutes would belong to the Bison, who went on a 5-0 run to grab the lead. A triple by Gittens broke the Reddies' scoring drought and tied the game 10-all. Again, HSU struggled to find the basket in the last two minutes of the period as Oklahoma Baptist led 14-10 through the first period.

Henderson continued to attack the perimeter, with Pickens connecting on her second three-pointer of the contest, and Farrar would later tie the game 14-14 at the charity stripe. HSU stayed hot from beyond the arc, with Gittens and Olivia Allen each draining triples to push the Reddies in front 20-16. Pickens soon knocked down her second trey of the period, but the Bison would control the final minute and a half with a 9-0 run to lead 28-23 at halftime.

After a cagey first half, points began to flow in the third period, with Farrar scoring four points to trim OKBU's lead to three. Back-and-forth, the two sides traded baskets, but the Reddies could not close the gap on the Bison as Oklahoma Baptist held a two to three-point margin, 37-34. The Bison extended their lead to eight points with consecutive baskets, but Allen and Sam Basson's back-to-back three-pointers would cut the lead to four. OKBU picked up late momentum in the final minute to carry a 49-42 advantage into the fourth quarter.

HSU quickly grabbed control of the game in the first half of the fourth period after Gittens and Pickens made back-to-back triples to reel in the Bison and tie the game 49-all with 6:25 remaining. The Reddies stayed hot, adding to their run with another six straight points to push ahead 55-49. After HSU's flurry of points, the Bison found their footing in the period with a 7-2 run to cut the Reddies' lead to one with 1:37 left. The final minute of the game saw Farrar and Gittens convert from the free-throw line to secure a 63-56 win.
