WEATHERFORD, Okla. - Henderson State claimed a 13-5 win in game one of Saturday's doubleheader to win the first series of the conference season against Southwestern Oklahoma State. The Bulldogs captured the final game, 4-1, to take one contest on the weekend.
Louis Holt recorded four hits on the day while
Logan Cowart added three hits for four RBI, all of which came in the first game.
Luke Rice matched Holt with three hits in the first game on day two, marking Rice's fourth three-hit game of the season.
Henderson State (6-5, 2-1 GAC) will return to Clyde Berry Field for the next four games, beginning with the season's second midweek contest Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 3 p.m. against Delta State.
GAME 1: Henderson State 13, Southwestern Okla. St. 5
Henderson State worked 13 walks in the eight-run victory with Cowart,
Kaden Argenbright,
Cal Jones and
Landon Ervin each seeing two apiece. Just short of matching the 13-issued walks was HSU's 12 hits, six of which came from Holt and Rice.
Starting pitcher
Reese Weaks (1-0) held Southwestern Oklahoma State scoreless through the first five innings, during which the Reddies scored 11 runs. Back-to-back four-run innings in the fifth and sixth off a combined five walks, four hits and two Bulldog errors opened the double-digit lead.
With SWOSU getting on the scoreboard in the sixth to make it 11-2, another two runs in the eighth with Cowart's third and fourth RBI re-opened th 13-2 lead. Three more runs from Southwestern brought the final score to 13-5.
GAME 2: Southwestern Okla. St. 4, Henderson State 1
As it had in the previous game, Henderson started out the scoring with a sacrifice fly from Argenbright to make it 1-0. The Bulldogs added two runs in the home-half of the first, as that was the only scoring until the fifth inning.
With the Reddies remaining scoreless save the first frame, three walks, a hit-by-pitch and a balk from HSU pitching granted Southwestern two more runs in the fifth inning. With Henderson only managing four hits in the seven-inning contest, SWOSU salvaged the weekend with the 4-1 victory.
